70 Years of Remembering and Building: Holocaust Survivors and the State of Israel

The central state ceremony marking the start of Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day in Israel will be held at Yad Vashem on Wednesday night, April 11th. The ceremony will be held in the presence of the President of the State of Israel and the Prime Minister, dignitaries, survivors, children of survivors and their families, together with the general public.

20:00 State Opening Ceremony of Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day, in the presence of the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Knesset and the President of the Supreme Court—Warsaw Ghetto Square.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on television, radio and the Yad Vashem website.
Admission to the State Opening Ceremony is by invitation only.

11:00-14:30 Behind the Scenes: Activities for the General Public on the Yad Vashem Campus.
On Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day, a series of gatherings with Yad Vashem experts will be on offer to the public, at which participants will have access to documents and artifacts that are not on display year-round.
13:00 Main memorial ceremony, Hall of Remembrance
17:30 Ceremony for Youth Movements with the participation of Minister of Education and in cooperation with the Education Ministry’s Youth and Social Administration and the Youth Movement Council—Valley of the Communities.

Admission to the Youth Movements’ Ceremony is by invitation only

Additional Information

Throughout the day, Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies will be running a variety of activities for educational groups from Israel and abroad and holding a number of musical performances as part of the “Musical Memory” project in cooperation with the Israel Association of Community Centers.

On Wednesday, 11 April 2018, Yad Vashem will be open to the public until 12:00 only.

On Thursday, 12 April 2018, Yad Vashem will be open to the public until 20:00 (entrance to the Holocaust History Museum until 19:00). The Holocaust History Museum will open at 9:00. The Visual Center and Children’s Memorial will open at 11:00.

Private vehicles will not be admitted to Yad Vashem on Wednesday, 11 April or Thursday, 12 April.

Parking facilities are available on Mt. Herzl and in the light railway car park. The shuttle service from Mt. Herzl to Yad Vashem and back will run all day.

Flashes of Memory: Photography during the Holocaust

The exhibition presents visual documentation, photographs and films, focusing a spotlight on the circumstances of the photograph and the worldview of the documenting photographer while emphasizing the different and unique viewpoint of the Jewish photographers as direct victims of the Holocaust.
