Simon Wiesenthal Center Statement on Recent Events in Israel

March 28, 2023

The events that we have witnessed over the last few weeks in Israel broke the heart of every lover of Zion – Jews and non-Jews.  As we approach the historic 75th anniversary of Israel’s creation, the Simon Wiesenthal Center urges Israel’s leaders – those on the right and on the left – to change course, to end the violence, to desist from hate speech, and to restore peace between brothers. The modern miracle that is today’s Israel traces back to the prophecy of Herzl, the unconditional love of Rabbi Kook, the tenacity of Ben-Gurion and his arch-rival Begin. How would they react if they were witness to such Sinat Chinum between Jews?

The creation of the State of Israel in 1948 was one of the greatest events in the 3,500-year history of the Jewish people. It is more than just a State it has been a symbol of hope, perseverance, and a real-time refuge for all Jews. To continue on its historic trajectory, we must overcome differences through robust democratic and Judaic values.  The House of Israel can and must overcome our differences, stand together, and restore this blessed land to its rightful place as one of the greatest democracies on Planet Earth.
