{"id":100448,"date":"2022-12-13T17:05:09","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T15:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/?p=100448"},"modified":"2022-12-13T10:53:46","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T08:53:46","slug":"18-05-78","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/?p=100448","title":{"rendered":"NYC Mayor Adams: No Plea Bargains for Antisemitic Attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reunion68.com\/Biuletyn\/img\/algem.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"35%\"><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><span><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/12\/12\/nyc-mayor-adams-no-plea-bargains-for-antisemitic-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NYC Mayor Adams: No Plea Bargains for Antisemitic Attacks<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Andrew Bernard<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 100%;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52558733042_f544ae5688_o-1.jpg\" width=\"100%\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>NYC Mayor Eric Adams Delivers Remarks at Orthodox Union Convening on Combating Antisemitism, December 12, 2022 (Photo: New York Governor\u2019s Office)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) called for the end of plea bargains for the perpetrators of hate crimes on Monday, saying that such assaults should not be \u201cdowngraded\u201d to a charge of harassment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere should be a no-plea-bargaining rule if you are arrested for hate crimes,\u201d Adams said at an event on antisemitism organized by the Orthodox Union (OU) at the Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York City.&nbsp;\u201cYou assault someone because they\u2019re Jewish, because they\u2019re African-American, because they wear a hijab, because of who they are, because they wear a turban\u2013then you should not not have that assault downgraded to harassment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Adams added that he did not believe a single person who has been arrested for a hate crime in New York City has ended up serving time in jail, a statistic he described as \u201cunacceptable.\u201d Adams also said that the relationship between the Black and Jewish communities needed particular attention, citing the successful efforts to restore peace between the communities in Crown Heights as a model to emulate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The OU event follows high-profile threats to the Jewish community in the New York area and greater nationwide attention on antisemitism following rapper Kanye West\u2019s antisemitic media tirades. In November, two armed men were&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/11\/21\/the-next-pittsburgh-or-poway-synagogue-massacre-was-averted-would-be-synagogue-attackers-charged-in-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arrested<\/a>&nbsp;at Penn Station after one of the men said he might \u201cshoot up a synagogue.\u201d While that potential attack was thwarted, Adams said in announcing the arrests that there would be an increased police presence at synagogues in the run-up to and during the Hanukkah holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The meeting also brings a New York State and City focus to the issue of antisemitism after the meeting between Doug Emhoff&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;husband of Vice-President Kamala Harris&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/12\/07\/second-gentleman-at-antisemitism-roundtable-im-proud-to-live-openly-as-a-jew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and national Jewish leaders<\/a>&nbsp;at the White House last Wednesday. George Selim&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;the Anti-Defamation League\u2019s (ADL) Senior VP for National Affairs, who attended that meeting, told&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>&nbsp;that social media, celebrity culture, and politics had created a \u201cperfect storm\u201d for the normalization of antisemitic conspiracy theories and tropes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">That new dynamic of antisemitic normalization enabled by technology and the media was a theme that Adams touched on Monday. \u201cSocial media has changed the dynamic,\u201d Adams said. \u201cWe have to have a full frontal assault on social media and the platforms that are spewing this hate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">New York\u2019s Governor Kathy Hochul (D), speaking at the same event on Monday, announced the launch of a statewide Hate and Bias Prevention Unit designed to tackle antisemitic and other hate crimes. Hochul said the new unit would not be a \u201cbureaucratic office.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis is going to be part of a statewide initiative going to all 62 counties to educate and also be an early warning system,\u201d Hochul said. \u201cThis is going to be a task force that is going to go all over the State of New York and have meetings convened and bring together stakeholders and the trusted voices that can rise up with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A statement from the Governor\u2019s office said the unit would be charged with public education and outreach, early warning detection in local communities, supporting communities where a bias incident has occurred, and that it will sit within the New York State Division of Human Rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hate crimes and other bias incidents targeting Jews are typically among the most common bias crimes perpetrated in New York State. In November, the NYPD&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recorded<\/a>&nbsp;a 125% increase in antisemitic crimes compared with November 2021, with attacks on Jews accounting for 60% of all hate crimes recorded that month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas also spoke at the event.
