Hillel and other Jewish student organizations were attacked with the age-old antisemitic\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/resources\/glossary-terms\/blood-libel?gclid=Cj0KCQiAgribBhDkARIsAASA5bvejkpy4eA-Vg5qNmoLI8qQjlVe6nsW6RGboepp7XfDRyRl2ae54fEaAhMWEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/resources\/glossary-terms\/blood-libel?gclid%3DCj0KCQiAgribBhDkARIsAASA5bvejkpy4eA-Vg5qNmoLI8qQjlVe6nsW6RGboepp7XfDRyRl2ae54fEaAhMWEALw_wcB&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SqrRHjO16n0ksWEfBH5_E\">blood libel trope<\/a>\u00a0of \u201chaving blood on their hands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Elsewhere, a heckler stood outside the main gate to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/queenseagle.com\/all\/2022\/9\/8\/man-continues-antisemitic-rants-at-queens-college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/queenseagle.com\/all\/2022\/9\/8\/man-continues-antisemitic-rants-at-queens-college&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3TCSYg1v-vfeTDTUIq8DTO\">Queens College in New York City,\u00a0<\/a>and shouted racist and antisemitic conspiracy theories through a megaphone, at students walking to class. He yelled that Jews \u201cwill literally rape your mother in front of your face \u2026 they have their own banks \u2026[and] were siphoning the wealth of Germany.\u201d At Wellesley College, the student newspaper editorial board\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/thewellesleynews.com\/2022\/09\/28\/the-wellesley-news-calls-for-the-liberation-of-palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thewellesleynews.com\/2022\/09\/28\/the-wellesley-news-calls-for-the-liberation-of-palestine\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw16RbWwaoCgPkk9N54wRnIX\">endorsed<\/a>\u00a0and encouraged the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishjournal.org\/2022\/10\/13\/wellesley-college-paper-endorses-bds-and-mapping-project-tufts-investigates-alleged-antisemitic-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/jewishjournal.org\/2022\/10\/13\/wellesley-college-paper-endorses-bds-and-mapping-project-tufts-investigates-alleged-antisemitic-incident\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1s_aUYn_cbnyPrFDvnp9Wg\">alarming\u00a0<\/a><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishjournal.org\/2022\/10\/13\/wellesley-college-paper-endorses-bds-and-mapping-project-tufts-investigates-alleged-antisemitic-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/jewishjournal.org\/2022\/10\/13\/wellesley-college-paper-endorses-bds-and-mapping-project-tufts-investigates-alleged-antisemitic-incident\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1s_aUYn_cbnyPrFDvnp9Wg\">Mapping Project<\/a>, which places a potential target on 500 Jewish and Zionist organizations in Massachusetts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">There is no doubt that the experience of being a Jewish college student has changed from when I was in college. Today, being a Jewish student leader can often mean battling antisemitism. It means combating the rise of white supremacist ideology on campus and beyond. It means unprecedented violence in Jewish spaces. And it means countering anti-Israel hatred and attacks on Jews for their real or presumed support for Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The antisemitic chalkings in Wisconsin, the vile verbal assault in New York, and the op-ed in Massachusetts targeted Jews for the imagined sin of supporting the Jewish state. Scapegoating \u201cthe Jews\u201d for global challenges is one of the oldest expressions of antisemitism. And Jewish college students are its newest target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even if we set aside for a moment the well-documented\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/news\/press-releases\/adl-audit-finds-antisemitic-incidents-in-united-states-reached-all-time-high-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.adl.org\/news\/press-releases\/adl-audit-finds-antisemitic-incidents-in-united-states-reached-all-time-high-in&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3XeeWcRRDzksJLkS44ZKde\">spike<\/a>\u00a0in national antisemitism, the climate on university campuses is something to notice. Hillel International last year\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/news\/press-releases\/one-third-of-jewish-students-experienced-antisemitism-on-college-campuses-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.adl.org\/news\/press-releases\/one-third-of-jewish-students-experienced-antisemitism-on-college-campuses-in&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1p04VBwcDSD7_ISnwFVJUw\">recorded more than three times<\/a>\u00a0the number of hateful acts targeting Jewish students than it did just four short years ago. In one generation of students, anti-Jewish hate on college campuses tripled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But the change is measured by more than statistics. It\u2019s also found in the rising level of open hostility facing our students. When campuses re-opened after long COVID-related closures, students returned eager for connection and a resumption of normalcy. Instead, they too frequently found that the hate festering underground had erupted onto the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-722453\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-722453&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3mMrHoYNcYxj0iJiIU07Vi\">campus quad<\/a>\u00a0with unabashed anti-Jewish and anti-Israel rhetoric and actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The radical polarization of our national politics and cultural zeitgeist coincides with a rising tolerance for apathy about direct attacks on Jewish students, Jewish spaces, and Jewish symbols. To be clear, extremist elements from across the political spectrum are guilty of tolerating \u2014 and even encouraging \u2014 these disturbing actions, and their dehumanizing and debilitating effects on the wellbeing of Jewish students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This troubling environment can impact every part of a Jewish student\u2019s experience. A recent joint survey by Hillel and the ADL found that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/news\/press-releases\/one-third-of-jewish-students-experienced-antisemitism-on-college-campuses-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.adl.org\/news\/press-releases\/one-third-of-jewish-students-experienced-antisemitism-on-college-campuses-in&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1p04VBwcDSD7_ISnwFVJUw\">15% of Jewish students<\/a>\u00a0across the country feel the need to hide their identities at their own schools for fear of being harassed. Many report feeling safe only at Hillel and other Jewish spaces on campus. And some have unenrolled from their chosen universities because they felt marginalized as Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This is vastly different from my own time on campus 15 years ago. When I was a student at Muhlenberg College in the mid-2000s, I encountered one antisemitic incident during my four years of student leadership. Of course, one incident of hatred is one too many, but in my work, I am supporting multiple campuses in confronting incidents of antisemitism on every single week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One thing that hasn\u2019t changed is that Hillel buildings, relationships with our professionals, and Hillel events around campus remain a safe space for Jewish college students. We are responding to the change in the campus environment as well. Hillel is working with local campus administrators and local law enforcement to ensure that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hillel.org\/about\/news-views\/news-views---blog\/news-and-views\/2021\/10\/06\/new-online-portal-reportcampushate-enables-college-students-to-report-and-address-antisemitism-on-campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.hillel.org\/about\/news-views\/news-views---blog\/news-and-views\/2021\/10\/06\/new-online-portal-reportcampushate-enables-college-students-to-report-and-address-antisemitism-on-campus&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0bZvk_uQ3QaK0wPBJz7rr3\">hate against Jews is recorded\u00a0<\/a>and investigated. We are\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/hillelsd.org\/2021\/06\/an-update-on-the-rise-in-antisemitism-and-anti-israel-bias-on-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/hillelsd.org\/2021\/06\/an-update-on-the-rise-in-antisemitism-and-anti-israel-bias-on-campus\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0kfgTCl3EyHDLD-SRjvDDV\">fighting back\u00a0<\/a>against the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement that targets Jewish students. We are\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/14\/opinion\/college-israel-anti-semitism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/14\/opinion\/college-israel-anti-semitism.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0Ib6xHCR_ZnAmG10zUjuxs\">unapologetically Zionist<\/a>\u00a0and are challenging all students \u2014 Jewish and non-Jewish \u2014\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2022-08-25\/ty-article\/.highlight\/why-a-pro-israel-campus-organization-is-bringing-jewish-students-to-ramallah\/00000182-d520-d9c0-a3d3-fd32b5fb0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2022-08-25\/ty-article\/.highlight\/why-a-pro-israel-campus-organization-is-bringing-jewish-students-to-ramallah\/00000182-d520-d9c0-a3d3-fd32b5fb0000&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2FKBazduAA8RVtBtbo3Ya2\">to see the complexity\u00a0<\/a>of seeking peace and security in our\u00a0 Jewish ancestral homeland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jewish students need to know that campus administrators and faculty understand the threats against them, take them seriously, and put policies in place to protect them. They need their peers to comprehend\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/us-students-report-jump-in-mental-scarring-from-campus-antisemitism-but-see-no-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/us-students-report-jump-in-mental-scarring-from-campus-antisemitism-but-see-no-end\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1qEWvb0cyYK1-EnwQnzShJ\">the generational trauma\u00a0<\/a>of persecution that today\u2019s Jewish college students are dealing with. They benefit when other student organizations and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/mycbs4.com\/news\/local\/uf-hillel-to-share-message-of-solidarity-chomp-hate-during-gator-game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/mycbs4.com\/news\/local\/uf-hillel-to-share-message-of-solidarity-chomp-hate-during-gator-game&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1670893998382000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Qt1k6toWk7mYhqK6R94_x\">teams stand with them<\/a>\u00a0in solidarity against hate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Despite the challenging environment on campus, Hillel is seeing rising participation in its programming and Jewish learning at colleges and universities across the country. Jewish students are exploring and celebrating their connections to Israel and learning about the history and challenges of the modern Jewish state, its politics, and its people. Our students are seeking out vibrant Jewish life, and they are thriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While being a Jewish college student today can be complicated, Hillel is there to empower Jewish students to own their Jewish story and proclaim their identities on campus with pride.
