Photo: REUTERS\/Amir Cohen\/Pool<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Israel\u00a0<\/span>condemned and the Palestinians welcomed on Saturday a United Nations General Assembly vote asking the International Court of Justice to provide an opinion on legal consequences of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel<\/span>\u2018s \u201coccupation\u201d of the Palestinian territories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Friday vote presents a challenge for<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel<\/span>i Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who this week took office at the head of a government which has set settlement expansion as a priority and which includes parties who want to annex West Bank land on which they are built.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe Jewish people are not occupiers in their own land nor occupiers in our eternal capital Jerusalem and no UN resolution can distort that historical truth,\u201d Netanyahu said in a video message, adding that<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/span>was not bound by the \u201cdespicable decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Along with Gaza and eastern Jerusalem, the Palestinians seek the West Bank for a state. Most countries consider<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel<\/span>\u2018s settlements there illegal, a view<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/span>disputes citing historical and Biblical ties to the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) also known as the World Court, is the top UN court dealing with disputes between states. Its rulings are binding, though the ICJ has no power to enforce them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The UN General Assembly asked the ICJ to give an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel<\/span>\u2018s \u201coccupation, settlement and annexation\u2026 including measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Members of Netanyahu\u2019s new government have pledged to bolster settlements with development plans, budgets and authorization of dozens of outposts built without permits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The cabinet includes newly created posts and restructured roles that grant some of those powers to pro-settler coalition partners, who ultimately aim to extend<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel<\/span>i sovereignty to the West Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Netanyahu, however, has given no indication of any imminent steps to annex the settlements, a move that would likely shake up its relations with Western and Arab allies alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Palestinians welcomed the UN vote in which 87 members voted in favor of adopting the request;<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel<\/span>, the United States and 24 other members voted against; and 53 abstained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe time has come for<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/span>to be a state subject to law, and to be held accountable for its ongoing crimes against our people,\u201d said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose Palestinian Authority has limited self-rule in the West Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Basem Naim, an official with Hamas, the Islamist militant group that controls Gaza, said it was \u201can important step toward confining and isolating the state of occupation (<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Israel<\/span>).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 100%;\" \/>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><em>Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion&#8217;68,<\/em><em><br \/>\nani te\u017c webmastera Blogu Reunion&#8217;68, chyba ze jest to wyra\u017anie zaznaczone.<br \/>\nTwoje uwagi, linki, w\u0142asne artyku\u0142y lub wiadomo\u015bci prze\u015blij na adres:<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"mailto:webmaster@reunion68.com\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">webmaster@reunion68.com<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%;\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Netanyahu Says Israel Not Bound by \u2018Despicable\u2019 UN Vote Reuters and Algemeiner Staff Israeli Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu attends a special session of the Knesset, Israel\u2019s parliament, to approve and swear in a new right-wing government, in Jerusalem December 29, 2022.
