(Richard Shotwell\/Invision\/AP)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On January 5, 2023, Christiane Amanpour\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/journalist\/christiane-amanpour\">once again<\/a>\u00a0demonstrated her deep-seated prejudice against Israel by implying there is a comparison between the actions of the Jewish state and those of the Syrian regime. The comments came during an interview with Dror Moreh, the Israeli director of \u201cThe Corridors of Power,\u201d during which the topics of Ukraine, the Holocaust, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Syria were raised. Toward the end, Amanpour asked Moreh:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>You are an Israeli. I don\u2019t know whether you were in Israel at the time, but you said that this red line in the neighboring country of Syria, where all these atrocities were being committed really, really made you angry and upset. Many will want to know, you know, do you feel equally angry about the horrible situation that\u2019s going on in your own country, and the human rights attacks, killings of Palestinians. Obviously, we know Israelis are also attacked, but what is your perspective, as an Israeli given the whole \u201cnever again\u201d paradigm in which you place this investigation?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Before delving into the appropriateness of comparing the justifications for the Syrian regime\u2019s attacks on its own citizens versus Israel\u2019s measures to defend against terrorism, let us first put in perspective the scale of the violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The United Nations\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2022\/06\/un-human-rights-office-estimates-more-306000-civilians-were-killed-over-10\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0that in ten years of conflict in Syria, over 306,000 civilians (not including combatants) have been killed, or about 30,000 a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has claimed in total from December 1987 (the start of the First Intifada) to May 2021\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/graphic-detail\/2021\/05\/18\/the-israel-palestine-conflict-has-claimed-14000-lives-since-1987\">approximately<\/a>\u00a014,000 Israeli and Palestinian lives, including both civilians and combatants. That\u2019s about 400 per year, which includes particularly deadly periods like the Second Intifada and the various wars and operations against Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Put another way, the Syrian civil war cost more than twice as many lives\u00a0<em>in a single year<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 without even counting combatants \u2013 as have been killed in\u00a0<em>34 years<\/em>\u00a0of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">There simply is no comparison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But even beyond just the numbers, Amanpour\u2019s comparison is morally obscene and dripping with partisan framing. Syrian regime atrocities are not just atrocities because of the sheer scale of civilian casualties. They are atrocities because the Syrian regime\u00a0<em>targeted<\/em>\u00a0civilians,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/oct\/01\/-syriaairstrikes-major-offensive-against-rebel-held-areas-of-aleppo\">barrel bombing<\/a>\u00a0hospitals and dropping\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/02\/17\/695545252\/more-than-300-chemical-attacks-launched-during-syrian-civil-war-study-says\">chemical weapons<\/a>\u00a0on civilian areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While Amanpour frames the conflict in terms of \u201ckillings of Palestinians\u201d \u2013 only mentioning that Israelis are \u201calso attacked\u201d as an afterthought \u2013 she conveniently ignores the context that the overwhelming majority of Palestinian deaths in 2022 (totaling 167 as of December 13, according to the Palestinian Authority) occurred\u00a0<em>while<\/em>\u00a0they were\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/2022-shaping-up-to-be-deadliest-for-israelis-and-palestinians-in-years\/\">attacking Israelis<\/a>. Others were killed in crossfire, or in the context of clashes. It would be like framing the coalition strikes against the Islamic State as the \u201ckillings of Muslims\u201d without mentioning the affiliation and activities of those particular Muslims.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reunion68.com\/Biuletyn\/img\/Lion.png\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Members of the terrorist organization Lion\u2019s Den during a <a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeTruzman\/status\/1601223892806250497\">march<\/a>\u00a0in Nablus in December 2022.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">By contrast, of the 31 Israelis killed by Palestinian terrorists last year, 27 of them (87%) were civilians who were deliberately targeted. These deaths came amidst a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.longwarjournal.org\/archives\/2022\/12\/analysis-west-bank-violence-trending-upward.php\">significant growth<\/a>\u00a0of terrorist activity in the West Bank. According to a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fdd.org\/analysis\/2022\/12\/12\/mapping-terrorism-in-the-west-bank\/\">tracker<\/a>\u00a0maintained by the think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, there were 796 Palestinian terror attacks between March and December 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Thus, even putting aside the vast gulf between casualty figures of the two conflicts, Amanpour\u2019s framing inverts reality. Contrary to her propagandistic framing and implication, the data shows Israel has targeted combatants in the context of fighting a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/palwatch.org\/page\/31033\">wave<\/a>\u00a0of deadly terrorist attacks by the Palestinian side which targeted civilians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While one may legitimately debate the appropriateness of specific Israeli policies and practices, there is simply no comparison, both statistically and morally, between Israel and Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime.
