The UN\u2019s\u00a0Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka<\/strong> <\/span>on Monday thanked a representative of Hezbollah for giving her a \u201ctour d\u2019horizon\u201d of Lebanese issues, eliciting a strongly-worded rebuke from Israeli officials.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI thank Mr. Ammar Moussawi of Hizbullah for a tour d\u2019horizon on issues of priority for Lebanon, including the election of a new President, the functioning of state institutions and the impact of regional and international developments on the country,\u201d Wronecka\u00a0wrote<\/a> in both English and Arabic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n[ Joann<\/span>a Wronecka<\/b>\u00a0(born 30 March 1958 in\u00a0Krotoszyn<\/a>)[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0is a Polish diplomat who has been serving as\u00a0United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon<\/a>\u00a0since 2021.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/span>
\nWronecka served as Poland’s ambassador to\u00a0Egypt<\/a>\u00a0(1999\u20132003),\u00a0Morocco<\/a>\u00a0(2005\u20132010), Permanent Representative to the\u00a0United Nations<\/a>\u00a0(2017\u20132021), and as\u00a0European Union<\/a>\u00a0Ambassador to\u00a0Jordan<\/a> (2011\u20132015). ]<\/span><\/p>\n

Moussawi is the head of international relations for Hezbollah, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the US, UK, Germany, Japan and others. In December, Hezbollah\u00a0handed over one of its supporters<\/a>\u00a0who shot and killed an Irish UN peacekeeper in an incident that Hezbollah\u2019s security chief called \u201cunintentional.\u201d A Hezbollah spokesperson\u00a0told Reuters<\/a>\u00a0at the time that the murder suspect was a supporter, but not a member, of the Iran-backed militia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli diplomats on Tuesday criticized Wronecka\u2019s decision to meet with Moussawi and for her choice of words in thanking him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo how does it feel to be indoctrinated by a terrorist? Care to share with us?\u201d asked Yaki Lopez, Head of Public Diplomacy at Israel\u2019s embassy in Berlin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wronecka, a Polish diplomat who previously as Poland\u2019s ambassador to the United Nations, is not the first special coordinator to court controversy for meeting with Hezbollah. Her predecessor, Jan Kubis, in 2019 met with Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem and\u00a0was gifted a copy of his book<\/a>, which Kubis called \u201ca necessary reading.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She was also\u00a0involved<\/a>\u00a0with the dispute between Lebanon and Israel regarding the two countries\u2019 maritime borders<\/span><\/p>\n
