Photo: Provided<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Award-winning Israeli actor Chaim Topol, who played Tevye in the famed musical\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>\u00a0both on stage and in the iconic film adaptation, died in Tel Aviv, Israel, at the age of 87, Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Topol, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s several years ago, first took on the role of Tevye in\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>\u00a0on stage in Israel and London in the late 1960s. He was chosen to play Tevye in the 1971 film over actor Zero Mostel, who had starred in the Broadway production. The musical is about a father who tries to maintain his Jewish traditions while marrying off his three daughters. His character became an icon and his renditions of\u00a0<em>If I Were A Rich Man<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Tradition<\/em>\u00a0remain among the most beloved songs in movie history<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201c[Topol\u2019s] iconic portrayal of Tevye inspired many around the globe and we celebrate the impact that he made on all who experienced his art,\u201d Zalmen Mlotek, artistic director of the National Yiddish Theatre, told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Topol played Tevye for decades and performed the role more than 3,500 times, according to\u00a0<em>The Associated Press.\u00a0<\/em>Though he starred in other films \u2014 including\u00a0<em>Cast a Giant Shadow\u00a0<\/em>with Kirk Douglas,\u00a0<em>Flash Gordon<\/em>\u00a0and the 1981 James Bond movie\u00a0<em>For Your Eyes Only<\/em>\u2014 he is most well-known for playing Tevye. He performed the role for the final time in 2014 when he appeared in a 50th anniversary tribute concert staged by the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, which featured several hundred alumni from the\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>\u00a0film and Broadway performances<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cGrowing up in Lubbock, Texas, [seeing]\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof\u00a0<\/em>the movie in 1972 really ignited the imagination of this little Jewish boy who was dreaming of a career in the theater and then Topol\u2018s performance absolutely validated that there could be a place for Jews in musical theater,\u201d said actor Steven Skybell, who starred as Tevye in the off-Broadway production of<em>\u00a0Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>\u00a0in Yiddish in 2018. \u201cIt was really a lightbulb moment for me. And I will always be indebted to his performance for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Topol, born in Tel Aviv in 1935,\u00a0 began his professional acting career in the 1964 hit film\u00a0<em>Sallah Shabati<\/em>, for which he won his first Golden Globe. The movie was also the first Israeli film nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign movie. He\u00a0was part of performance ensembles and theater troupes during his mandatory military service in the Israel Defense Forces. Judea Pearl, who\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yudapearl\/status\/1633762489967198209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>\u00a0he did basic training with Topol in the IDF in 1953, remembered that the actor \u201cwas able to make the whole platoon laugh to the ground, including the toughest commanders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">His performance of Tevye won him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture \u2014 Musical or Comedy in 1972, beating out Gene Wilder\u2019s Willy Wonka and three other candidates. Topol was also nominated for an Oscar \u2014 one of eight nominations that the film received \u2014 and in 1991, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in a Broadway revival of\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cChaim Topol was larger than life,\u201d Ari Ingel, the director of the non-profit organization Creative Community for Peace, told The Algemeiner after the actor\u2019s death. He added, \u201cFollowing the success and notoriety for his portrayal of Tevye in\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>, Topol became a de facto cultural ambassador for the Jewish people and the State of Israel. A consummate professional, Topol was an icon who used his craft to inspire, unite, and bring people together. May his memory be a blessing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The official Twitter account for the state of Israel tweeted about the late actor: \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">To many of you, he was Tevya, to us\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Chaim Topol<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u00a0was a national treasure, a cultural icon and above all a human being who loved his country \u2026 we lost a legend and a\u00a0<em>mensch<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Turner Classic Movies said following his passing, \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">We are deeply saddened to hear the loss of actor, singer, and illustrator\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-b88u0q r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Chaim Topol<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">. A multitalented international star of the stage &amp; screen, we will always remember his warmth that will continue to endure as this sunrise sets.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cFrom\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>\u00a0to the roof of the world, Haim Topol, who has passed away from us, was one of the most outstanding Israeli stage artists,\u201d\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Isaac_Herzog\/status\/1633687641542598659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herzog said.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cA gifted actor who conquered many stages in Israel and overseas, filled the cinema screens with his presence and above all entered deep into our hearts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-6\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also commented on Topol\u2019s death, saying that his \u201ccontribution to Israeli culture will continue to exist for generations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Topol illustrated more than 20 books in Hebrew and English and his sketches of Israeli presidents were turned into stamps. In 2015, he was awarded the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement.
