Israeli director, producer and screenwriter Hagai Levi will write and direct a series called\u00a0The Girl Who Learned How to Kneel\u00a0<\/em>that is loosely based on the diary entries of Dutch author Etty Hillesum during World War II before she was deported and murdered in the Auschwitz concentration camp, Screen Daily\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The series will be set in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Production is expected to begin in Amsterdam in the winter of 2024 and the series is a co-production between the French companies Arte France and Les Films* du Poisson, and Topkapi Films from the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hillesum was born Jan. 15, 1914, and was the oldest of four children in a middle-class family. She was in her mid-20s when she wrote diaries and letters in occupied Amsterdam and the Westerbork transit camp during the years 1941 to 1943, the year she died in Auschwitz at the age of 29, three months after arriving at the concentration camp, according to Yad Vashem. Considered the adult counterpart to fellow Dutch diarist and Auschwitz victim Anne Frank, Hillesum\u2019s writings were also later published, liked Frank\u2019s.\u00a0Etty Hillesum:\u00a0<\/em>An Interrupted Life and Letters from Westerbork\u00a0<\/em>was printed in 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Girl Who Learned How to Kneel<\/em>\u00a0will be filmed in Dutch and German, despite Levi\u2019s experience with English-language shows, because he said \u201cit was very important for me to be truthful to all the details and all the nuances of the original story,\u201d Screen Daily reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of Levi\u2019s most notable projects include\u00a0Scenes From A Marriage<\/em>\u00a0starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, the Israeli television series\u00a0Be\u2019Tipul<\/em>\u00a0that was adapted to HBO\u2019s\u00a0In Treatment, The Affair<\/em>\u00a0with Sarah Treem and the Israeli series Our\u00a0Boys.\u00a0<\/em>He served as producer, director, screenwriter, co-creator, executive producer and showrunner on the various projects, and\u00a0Our Boys<\/em>\u00a0won 14 Israeli Academy awards.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSince I read it 10 years ago, it was my dream to make a film or a series about her,\u201d Levi said about\u00a0The Girl Who Learned How to Kneel<\/em>, adding that the project kept getting delayed because \u201cevery time I made another American TV series, it was postponed again and again.\u201d He called\u00a0The Girl Who Learned How to Kneel<\/em>\u00a0a \u201cvery modern, contemporary story even though it takes place in the beginning of the 40s in the Netherlands\u201d and one that is filled with \u201cinspiration, compassion and strength in difficult times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Les Films du Poisson\u2019s Yael Fogiel described the series as a \u201cstory of spirituality, desire and love\u201d about \u201ca young and modern woman who finds a way to believe in life again as the situation gets worse and worse around her and she loses her freedom as a Jewish woman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
