Calls to halt funding come on heels of Free Beacon report exposing funding for far-left Israeli organizations.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

A group of Republican senators is calling on the Biden administration to \u201cimmediately cease funding\u201d for a far-left Israeli nonprofit that is working to unseat Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his conservative government coalition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four Republican senators\u2014Ted Cruz (Texas), Marco Rubio (Fla.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), and Bill Hagerty (Tenn.)\u2014blasted<\/a>\u00a0the State Department for funneling taxpayer funds to the Movement for Quality Government (MQG), a left-wing Israeli nonprofit that is leading nationwide protests against Netanyahu\u2019s government over plans to reform the country\u2019s historically powerful Supreme Court. Those plans that are on standby as a result of mass protests led by MQG.<\/span><\/p>\n

The left-wing group has received more than $38,000 in funding from the United States since 2020,\u00a0the\u00a0Washington Free Beacon<\/em>\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0in March. The funding has raised questions about how a partisan foreign organization was able to obtain American dollars. The State Department typically avoids bolstering partisan groups to avoid the appearance of political meddling.<\/span><\/p>\n

The funding for MQG comes amid chilly relations between the Biden administration and Netanyahu. President Joe Biden\u00a0waited more than a week\u00a0to call Netanyahu after the Israeli prime minister\u2019s 2022 election victory and has\u00a0said\u00a0in recent days that he will not be\u00a0inviting Netanyahu<\/a>\u00a0to the White House any time soon due to unrest over the Supreme Court reform effort.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biden administration officials have been critical of Netanyahu\u2019s battle with the Israeli Supreme Court, with some\u00a0accusing\u00a0the Israeli leader of eroding democracy in the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Republican senators say the funding for MQG indicates that the Biden administration supports the opposition group\u2019s efforts to oust Netanyahu and destroy his governing coalition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis pattern of the State Department funding partisan organizations in an allied democracy is unacceptable,\u201d the senators wrote. \u201cIt makes no difference which side of the political divide a given organization is aligned with. If the government of a U.S. partner or ally was funding partisan organizations in the United States, we would rightly find such\u00a0foreign interference<\/a>\u00a0in our democracy unacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The lawmakers also note that the State Department has been caught in the past channeling taxpayer funds to partisan Israeli groups that oppose Netanyahu, Israel\u2019s longest-serving leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, this is\u00a0not the first time<\/a>\u00a0that State Department funds have been employed by left-wing partisan organizations in Israel,\u201d they wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations\u00a0discovered<\/a>\u00a0in 2016 that the State Department sent more than $300,000 to the OneVoice movement, another far-left Israeli groups that ultimately diverted \u201cthese resources for the political purpose of launching a grassroots campaign in Israel to elect \u2018anybody but Bibi [Netanyahu]\u2019 in the 2015 Israeli parliamentary election.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Netanyahu, in remarks late last month,\u00a0pushed back<\/a>\u00a0against the Biden administration\u2019s criticism of his government,\u00a0saying, \u201cIsrael is a sovereign country which makes its decisions by the will of its people and not based on pressures from abroad, including from the best of friends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
