Photo: Instagram<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Human rights activist, former Miss Universe contestant and Iraq native Sarah Idan has filed with the Federal Election Commission and is officially running to represent California\u2019s 30th District in the US House of Representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Los Angeles resident and founder of the non-profit bipartisan organization Humanity Forward&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sarahidan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will be running<\/a>&nbsp;as a Democrat for a position in Congress currently held by Representative Adam Schiff, who is vacating the seat to run for the Senate in 2024. If she wins, she will be the first Iraqi female immigrant and secular Muslim Zionist in history to be elected to Congress, she told&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a better candidate to represent minority groups than me being an immigrant, Muslim woman and coming from Iraq, a country directly affected by US [foreign] policies,\u201d the 33-year-old explained. \u201cMy voice is definitely the voice of the minority and in Congress, I feel like we need an Iraqi voice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Idan was born in 1990 in Baghdad and is the second youngest of five kids. When she was 18, she volunteered with the US Army in Iraq as a translator. She moved to America two years later and became a US citizen in 2015. Her late father, who died in 2021 from COVID-19, was a military engineer for Saddam Hussein\u2019s Ba\u2019ath Party but left the party when he saw Hussein orchestrate violent attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cktj1muPZRZ\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=540&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.algemeiner.com&amp;rp=%2F2023%2F06%2F07%2Fsarah-idan-former-miss-iraq-and-ardent-zionist-runs-for-congress-to-be-voice-of-reason-in-democratic-party%2F#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A1151.199999999255%2C%22ls%22%3A573.9000000003725%2C%22le%22%3A1026.199999999255%7D\" width=\"700\" height=\"1174\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"yes\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Idan is also the founder and CEO of Humanity Forward, which is \u201ccommitted to building bridges among Muslims and Jews in order to surpass borders and promote reconciliation, tolerance, mutual understanding, and peace,\u201d according to its website. She hosts a podcast called the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/02\/14\/disturbed-frontman-tells-artists-to-ignore-pressure-from-bds-supporters-about-performing-in-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Sarai Talk Show<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;and received the Ambassador for Peace Award by UN Watch in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Idan represented Iraq in the Miss Universe pageant in 2017. She&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/02\/27\/miss-universe-former-contestants-from-iraq-israel-open-up-about-their-friendship-despite-facing-backlash-death-threats-after-taking-selfie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received death threats<\/a>&nbsp;and was forced to leave her home country after posing with Miss Israel Adar Gandelsman during the competition. Her citizenship from Iraq was also revoked because of the incident and her family was forced to flee the country in the aftermath of the scandal. Her family now lives in another Arab country that have formal relations with Israel. Idan has continued to push for solidarity with Israel as well as&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/03\/24\/diversity-is-definitely-there-former-miss-iraq-sarah-idan-defends-israel-against-apartheid-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defend the country<\/a>&nbsp;and promote the normalization of relations with the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The issues that are the core of Idan\u2019s election campaign include tackling the crime rates in Los Angeles, poverty, homelessness, inflation, strengthening relations with Israel, and building more opportunities for Israel and California to support each others economic growth. She told&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>&nbsp;that in the MENA region, Israel is \u201cone of the only true allies to actually support the United States and share the same ideology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Idan has criticized in the past Democrats such as Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib and other members of the Congressional \u201cSquad\u201d for making remarks critical of Jews and Israel. The former beauty queen told&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>&nbsp;they are one of the main reasons why she is running for Congress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI just feel like sadly the Democratic party has been hijacked by loud voices of far-left socialists and I don\u2019t think they represent many of the people with liberal views,\u201d she said. \u201cThey have taken it to an extreme. It\u2019s not only about social issues. Even when it comes to foreign policy and their involvement with basically enemies of the US and trying to always attack our allies in the Middle East [like Israel].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cEven the woman rights movement in Iran,\u201d she adding, talking about how Omar defamed Iranian journalist and human rights activist Masih Alinejad as \u201cIslamophobic\u201d \u2014 even though she was born a Muslim in Iran \u2014 and shared an article&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlinejadMasih\/status\/1215673860609204226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;in 2020 that questioned the latter\u2019s credentials as she continues to advocate for women\u2019s rights in Iran. Omar\u2019s husband also&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimMynett\/status\/1486354013612302338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accused<\/a>&nbsp;Alinejad on Twitter of not liking Muslims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis is why I feel like we need a voice like mine because we need a secular Muslim,\u201d Idan explained. \u201cI want to be the voice of reason and I hate how \u2018The Squad,\u2019 whenever anyone questions them, [like] when they attack Israel, they always [claim] \u2018I\u2019m being targeted because I\u2019m a Muslim, a woman of color.\u2019 I just feel like we need someone like me who can literally say, \u2018No, this is not why. I\u2019m an Arab, Muslim, immigrant woman of color and I do not share your ideology or agenda.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Idan also believes that she can bring to Congress something that many others can\u2019t, which is first-hand experience of what it\u2019s like to live in the Middle East. She explained that some members of the \u201cThe Squad\u201d like Omar \u2014 whose family fled Somalia as refugees \u2014 left their home countries when they were very young and as refugees \u201cso they don\u2019t have a clue about the geo-politics and problems in the Middle East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAs an activist who is involved and comes from the Middle East, I would represent a more realistic picture of what\u2019s going on rather than people who came here when they were refugees at a very young age and never dealt with what I went through and am still going through until today, me and my family,\u201d Idan added.&nbsp; \u201cI have all this passion and I really want to be involved because I am directly affected by all these decisions, by what Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib and AOC [New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] are pushing. My family is in danger. I\u2019m in danger. I\u2019m not welcome in Iraq and I\u2019ll probably get killed the minute I land there.
