It is also often artless hypocrisy. The latter has been on display throughout the months of demonstrations in Israel against judicial reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to protest what they call a \u201ccoup\u201d that will weaken Israeli democracy, officials have expressed outrage at their actions, calling them \u201ctraitors and anarchists.\u201d Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared protesters to settlers who rioted in a Palestinian village and said, \u201cClaims of a democratic collapse are detached and intended to scare the public.\u201d He and other ministers condemned protests at their homes. The defense minister has called the refusal of reservists to show up for duty \u201cdangerous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What would you do if you believed your government was a threat to the nation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Let\u2019s roll the videotape from 1994 and 1995 to see how the right wing, which is in such high dudgeon, reacted to what it viewed as a threat to the nation and how the left-wing government responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On July 4, 1994,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1994-07-04-mn-11810-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reported that \u201chundreds of angry Jews clashed with police\u201d outside Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin\u2019s house over the Oslo agreement. Rabin \u201caccused his opponents of inciting violence with scare stories of a Palestinian-controlled Jerusalem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier, \u201cone of the biggest anti-government rallies in Jerusalem\u2019s modern history had turned ugly as thousands of Jews took to the streets late Saturday, some throwing rocks at Arab-owned shops, burning cars and defying riot police.\u201d&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/07\/03\/world\/angry-crowds-in-jerusalem-protest-arafat-s-visit-to-gaza.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reported the crowd shouted, \u201cRabin is a traitor!\u201d and burned his picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Inciting the crowd, Netanyahu said: \u201cArafat, who is personally responsible for the murder of thousands of Jews and non-Jews, this war criminal, is being hoisted aloft by the Government of Israel, which is permitting him to carry out the first phase of his plan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Later rallies featured posters of Rabin wearing a keffiyeh and SS uniform. Some similar posters of Netanyahu have been seen this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Some Labor government ministers said the media was overly sympathetic to the protesters against Oslo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Does that sound familiar?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It should because Netanyahu&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/netanyahu-blames-biased-media-for-stirring-up-anger-over-judicial-overhaul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in March that \u201cwe are witnessing an unprecedented attack by biased media channels against the government, fully mobilized to serve opponents of the reform.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>LAT<\/em>&nbsp;said in 1994, \u201cprotesters taunted riot police from a makeshift \u201ctent city,\u201d which government opponents set up opposite Rabin\u2019s office a month ago. Some blew whistles and banged cooking pans, hoping to be heard inside the Cabinet meeting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Today, the coalition is criticizing the police for being too lenient. Then, 65 demonstrators were arrested and later released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>NYT&nbsp;<\/em>said several ministers accused the opposition of abusing democratic freedoms. Israeli Communications Minister Shulamit Aloni, for example, said, \u201cIt\u2019s a rebellion\u201d and that the demonstrators \u201care presenting a legitimate government as traitors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOpposition leaders charged that Mr. Rabin was panicking in the face of legitimate protest and trying to gag his critics,\u201d according to the&nbsp;<em>NYT<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Today, protesters say they are fighting for democracy; then it was referred to as a battle for the defense of Jerusalem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A few months earlier, another&nbsp;<em>NYT<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/04\/19\/world\/now-it-s-the-israeli-right-that-urges-soldiers-to-refuse-to-evict-settlers.html?searchResultPosition=86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a>&nbsp;noted that three influential rabbis said religious law requires soldiers to defy any army order to evacuate Jewish settlers from the territories. Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir agreed that soldiers should disobey orders to remove Jews \u201c\u2018from the homeland\u2019 because that would be equivalent to an order to kill his parents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rabin said such talk would result in \u201cthe destruction of the Israeli Defense Forces and the security of the state.\u201d Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Ehud Barak warned that soldiers refusing to follow orders would go to prison. Three soldiers who refused reserve duty at the time were briefly jailed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In March 2023, the same Ehud Barak&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/ehud-barak-netanyahu-has-gone-off-the-rails-must-be-removed-from-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cPeople who have risked their lives many times, and lost colleagues, in the service of a democracy are not prepared to do so in the service of a dictatorship or a dictator.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After calling for \u201cnon-violent civil disobedience,\u201d the Netanyahu government&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/incitement-task-force-to-probe-barak-golan-after-calls-for-anti-overhaul-uprising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a>&nbsp;created a task force to investigate whether Barak could be charged with incitement. Regarding the reservists refusing to show up for duty, Netanyahu&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/07\/17\/netanyahu-vows-crackdown-on-military-no-shows-in-judicial-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cThe government won\u2019t accept insubordination. The government will act against it and will take all necessary steps to ensure our security and our future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After the Rabin government announced a ban on new settlements in January 1995, the&nbsp;<em>NYT&nbsp;<\/em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/01\/21\/world\/world-news-briefs-israeli-premier-criticized-for-promise-to-arafat.html?searchResultPosition=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;settlers considered it \u201ca virtual declaration of war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In an article on Aug. 13, 1995, the&nbsp;<em>NYT<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/08\/13\/world\/israel-faces-the-limits-of-dissent.html?searchResultPosition=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;on demonstrations by settlers who blocked highways and hoped to bring the government to its knees with a wave of popular resistance. One settler said the goal was \u201cparalyzing the army.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The report said \u201cin an unusually speedy trial, a leader [Moshe Feiglin] of a group that snarled traffic across the country last Tuesday was sentenced to a fine of more than $3,000 or 10 months in jail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe Government calls the actions dangerous assaults on law and order, while the settlers say they are following a democratic tradition of non-violent civil disobedience,\u201d the&nbsp;<em>Times&nbsp;<\/em>noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"text-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This month, police used water cannons to disperse protestors and arrested some who blocked roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>NYT&nbsp;<\/em>headline, \u201cIsrael Faces the Limits of Dissent,\u201d is apropos of the current controversy. How far is it reasonable to go to protest policies one side believes threaten the nation? In the 1990s, the right saw Oslo as endangering Israel\u2019s security. It adopted much of the same rhetoric and methods to express its dissent as demonstrators against judicial reform today and were vilified by the government. Now, the shoe is on the other foot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">No one should be surprised when history repeats itself. I am reminded of a panel discussion involving a leftist member of Knesset and a right-wing former ambassador. The MK called on American Jews to protest the right-wing government\u2019s policies. The ambassador reminded her that they held the opposite view when the left was in power. She could have said the same thing applied to the right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The good news is that Israel survived the turbulence of the Oslo protests (though many believe they cost the life of a prime minister).
