Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre released a statement this week apologizing for antisemitic remarks made by the late British author of children\u2019s books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The museum and charity \u2014 located in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, in England \u2014 said in a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/roalddahlmuseum.org\/aboutthemuseum\/antiracismstatement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a>&nbsp;shared on its website that it supports an apology that the Dahl family and Roald Dahl Story Company&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roalddahl.com\/about\/apology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issued in 2020<\/a>&nbsp;regarding its namesake\u2019s antisemitic views about Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dahl was notorious for his antisemitic beliefs, which included his remark that \u201cthere is a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity, maybe it\u2019s a kind of lack of generosity towards non-Jews,\u201d according to a 1983 interview the author gave to Britain\u2019s&nbsp;<em>New Statesman<\/em>&nbsp;magazine, adding that \u201ceven a stinker like Hitler didn\u2019t just pick on them for no reason.\u201d Dahl died in 1990 at the age of 74.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe do not repeat Dahl\u2019s antisemitic statements publicly, but we do keep a record of what he wrote and said in the Museum\u2019s collection, so it is not forgotten,\u201d the museum said in its statement. \u201cRoald Dahl\u2019s racism is undeniable and indelible but what we hope can also endure is the potential of Dahl\u2019s creative legacy to do some good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Apart from his controversial remarks about Jews, Dahl\u2019s hatred of Israel and Zionism is also well documented.\u201cI\u2019m certainly anti-Israeli, and I\u2019ve become antisemitic in as much as that you get a Jewish person in another country like England strongly supporting Zionism,\u201d he&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/02\/26\/gobblefunk-author-roald-dahls-antisemitic-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Independent<\/em>&nbsp;in 1990. \u201cIt\u2019s the same old thing: we all know about Jews and the rest of it. There aren\u2019t any non-Jewish publishers anywhere, they control the media\u2014jolly clever thing to do\u2014that\u2019s why the president of the United States has to sell all this stuff to Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The museum also noted that since 2021 it has worked with the Jewish organizations such as the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council, the Community Security Trust and the Antisemitism Policy Trust to further educate themselves and train its staff about antisemitism. The institution&nbsp;is also developing teaching resources for schools that aim \u201cto combat prejudice by championing universal children\u2019s rights, explored through the experiences of characters in Roald Dahl\u2019s stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"adm-inline-article-ad-1\" class=\"admz \" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div class=\"adma boomerang \" data-device=\"Desktop\" data-width=\"300\">\n<div class=\"pmc-adm-boomerang-pub-div ad-text\" data-priority=\"10\">\n<div id=\"gpt-variety-article-mid-article-uid0\" class=\" adw-300 adh-250\" data-is-adhesion-ad=\"\" data-google-query-id=\"CMfh343qn4ADFUcHiAkdKI4HiA\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe want to keep listening and talking to explore how our organization might make further contributions towards combatting hate and prejudice, supporting the work of experts already working in this area, including those from the Jewish community,\u201d the museum added. \u201cRoald Dahl\u2019s racism is undeniable and indelible but what we hope can also endure is the potential of Dahl\u2019s creative legacy to do some good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The new statement from the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre will also be displayed on a panel outside of the institution\u2019s entrance, according to&nbsp;<em>Variety.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dahl penned some of the most popular children\u2019s books around the world, including&nbsp;<em>Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em>, which is the basis of the upcoming film<em>&nbsp;Wonka<\/em>&nbsp;starring Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet. A number of his books have been adopted into films. Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company in September 2021, and after that released the film version of&nbsp;<em>Matilda the Musical<\/em>.
