Photo: Ermell via Wikimedia Commons<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A state bank in Bavaria, Germany, has agreed to return an artwork by famed Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky to the family of a Dutch Jewish couple who originally owned the painting in the Netherlands,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/24\/arts\/germans-return-kandinsky-to-heirs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reported on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bayerische Landesbank (BayernLB) said in a statement that it will follow&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/users\/shiryn\/Downloads\/23-06-13-recommendation-lewenstein-bayernlb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a recommendation<\/a>&nbsp;of the German independent advisory commission on Nazi-confiscated cultural property, which advised that the 1907 painting<em>&nbsp;Colorful Life<\/em>&nbsp;should be returned to the heirs of Hedwig Lewenstein Weyermann and Irma Lewenstein Klein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cEvery restitution is important to the families of persecuted victims as it provides them with a sense of healing, justice and dignity,\u201d James Palmer, who represents the heirs, told&nbsp;<em>The New York Times.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Emanuel A. Lewenstein, an art collector and director of a sewing machine factory, and his wife, Hedwig Lewenstein Weyermann, lived in Amsterdam and purchased&nbsp;<em>Colorful Life<\/em>&nbsp;in May 1923. Starting in 1933, after her husband\u2019s death, Weyermann loaned the painting to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
