Credit: Amos Ben Gershom\/GPO.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It\u2019s the gift that keeps on not giving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Months after Benjamin Netanyahu was reelected Israeli prime minister late last year, U.S. President Joe Biden has yet to invite the leader of one of Washington\u2019s closest allies to the White House.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Biden administration has twice extended an invitation to Israeli President Isaac Herzog to visit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, and Herzog made his latest trip to Washington in mid-July. Some decried that invitation as a breach of protocol, as Israel\u2019s presidency is a symbolic role, while the prime minister heads the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Then diplomatic protocol seesawed again, and again. Timed around Herzog\u2019s visit, Biden and Netanyahu spoke on the phone, after which the Israeli leader announced that he had finally been invited to meet Biden. But rather than that being the end of the story, White House and State Department spokesmen have repeatedly declined to name the venue of the meeting, even when asked to confirm that it was to be the White House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And then, last week, Israeli media reported that the Biden administration had confirmed it had not invited Netanyahu to the White House, although articles cited atmospheric quotes from the White House stating, as it had for weeks, that the meeting would occur somewhere in the United States, rather than flat-out denying a White House meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As the Biden administration demurs in its public statements about the nature of the invitation, JNS sought answers from declared 2024 candidates about how soon, if at all, into their presidencies they would invite Netanyahu\u2014or another Israeli prime minister\u2014to the White House, and what they made of Biden\u2019s handling of a potential Oval Office invite to the Israeli premier. Three campaigns responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Abraham Accords 2.0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe centerpiece of my Middle East policy in year one will be to consummate \u2018Abraham Accords 2.0\u2019 by adding Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Indonesia to the pact,\u201d Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican candidate for president, told JNS. (He told JNS\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/us-news\/vivek-ramaswamy\/23\/7\/31\/306696\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">something similar<\/a>\u00a0last month.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe Palestine question shouldn\u2019t hold Israel or the rest of the Middle East hostage to economic prosperity and security,\u201d added Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur. \u201cWith strengthened economic and diplomatic ties, Israel will be on a path to be strong on its own feet by the end of this decade. That will be good both for the U.S. and for Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">China is filling \u201cthe diplomatic void created by an absentee American commander in chief, who risks sleepwalking us into a global nuclear conflict by the day,\u201d he added. \u201cI will immediately course-correct starting in January 2025 through diplomacy that advances U.S. interests while avoiding war.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>\u2018Bankrupt\u2019 Israel policy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cPresident Biden\u2019s continued insults to Prime Minister Netanyahu further underscores the bankruptcy of the administration\u2019s policy toward Israel,\u201d Democratic candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., told JNS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe can differ on policies without demeaning important allies. You don\u2019t treat your friends like that. If you have a disagreement, you talk,\u201d\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/us-news\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/23\/7\/17\/303383\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kennedy<\/a>\u00a0added. \u201cThe United States must engage Israel for the security of the entire region. We cannot and must not ignore Israel\u2019s prime minister.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>One of the first calls<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One of Nikki Haley\u2019s first calls as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations\u2014bucking protocol, she has\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/usun.usmission.gov\/ambassador-nikki-haley-has-first-meetings-and-phone-call-with-the-permanent-representatives-of-israel-the-united-kingdom-france-and-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u2014was to her Israeli counterpart Danny Danon. \u201cNikki Haley will make sure that one of the first calls she makes as president will be to Israel,\u201d Ken Farnaso, the former South Carolina governor\u2019s press secretary, told JNS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt\u2019s shameful that Biden has buckled under global pressure and has worsened our relationship with Israel,\u201d added Farnaso. \u201cUnlike Joe Biden, President Haley will always have Israel\u2019s back and work towards deepening ties with our ally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Haley addressed the lack of White House invitation for Netanyahu during a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/nikkihaley.com\/2023\/07\/17\/nikki-haley-delivers-powerful-defense-of-israel-at-cufi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speech<\/a>\u00a0she delivered last month at the Christians United for Israel conference. \u201cJoe Biden continues to show us what a weak president looks like. He called on Israel\u2019s prime minister to, and I quote, \u2018walk away\u2019 from his reforms. He then said the prime minister \u2018cannot continue down this road.\u2019 And just today, Biden called Netanyahu to complain. He won\u2019t let it go,\u201d Haley said at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cJoe Biden is risking our friendship with Israel\u2014just because he doesn\u2019t like Benjamin Netanyahu,\u201d she added in the speech. \u201cFor the record, it took Joe Biden far too long to invite Netanyahu to the United States. He finally made the offer today.
