Now they&#8217;re complaining about the government that did form.<\/strong><br \/>\n.<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.jpost.com\/image\/upload\/c_fill,g_faces:center,h_537,w_822\/548796\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>MK BENNY GANTZ addresses the Knesset plenum last month. \/ (photo credit: YONATAN SINDEL\/FLASH90)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">MK\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-721881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benny Gantz<\/a>\u00a0can boycott Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government or complain about it, but he can\u2019t do both.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For more than four years, Gantz and other opposition leaders have insisted that they would not join a coalition with a \u201cprime minister under indictment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">There are two problems with that policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The first is that after more than seven years of investigations into alleged wrongdoing and a trial that has been ongoing for three years and counting, the key case against Netanyahu is unraveling \u2013 and this without a single defense witness having been called to the stand.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The state of the trial was revealed in June 2023 when the three distinguished Jerusalem District Court judges hearing the case informed the \u00a0prosecution that it would be \u201cvery difficult to establish the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/politics-and-diplomacy\/article-747559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bribery charge against Netanyahu<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It emerged that the very charge that had sparked national turmoil \u2013 leading to five senseless rounds of Knesset elections and hindering the momentum of Mideast peace brought about by the historic Abraham Accords \u2013 does not hold water.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"g-row\">\n<div class=\"margin-container-body-text\">\n<div id=\"startBannerSticky\" class=\"article-inner-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The second problem with the opposition\u2019s boycott of Netanyahu is that the voters grew as weary of it as they were distrustful of the indictments. Fully informed of all the charges against him, the lion\u2019s share of the public gave Netanyahu and the parties that would end up as his coalition partners a solid parliamentary majority of 64 out of 120 seats.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rather than spurring Gantz and company to reconsider their intransigent stance and attempt, for the good of the country, to become a part of Netanyahu\u2019s coalition-in-formation, they chose to opt out and to whine about the one that he did forge.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Worse, they dusted off an old mantra used for years by Netanyahu\u2019s detractors at home and abroad \u2013 that the government is \u201cthe most extreme in Israel\u2019s history.\u201d Indeed, there is nothing new in that label. In a 2009 op-ed in Foreign Policy, for instance, former Israeli peace negotiator Daniel Levy referred to Netanyahu\u2019s government as \u201cthe most right-wing\u2026 in Israel\u2019s history.\u201d In a 2013 piece for the Daily Beast, journalist Ali Gharib wrote that Israel had \u201cjust sworn in perhaps its most right-wing government ever.\u201d In 2014, Jeffrey Heller of Reuters stated that Netanyahu was \u201cwell-positioned to form what would likely be the most right-wing government in Israel\u2019s 66-year history.\u201d In 2015, Ishaan Tharoor wrote in The Washington Post: \u201cAn 11th-hour deal on Wednesday led to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu forming the most right-wing government in his country\u2019s history.\u201d And in a farewell speech in 2016, then-outgoing-US Secretary of State John Kerry called Netanyahu\u2019s coalition \u201cthe most right-wing in Israeli history, with an agenda driven by its most extreme elements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Other examples abound. Today\u2019s chanting of the tired mantra is simply more of the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The noise has been drowning out a crucial point, however: The Israeli opposition could have become a part of the coalition, yet opted to boycott the option.
