{"id":106742,"date":"2023-09-10T17:05:53","date_gmt":"2023-09-10T15:05:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/?p=106742"},"modified":"2023-09-09T12:41:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-09T10:41:24","slug":"07-05-91","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/?p=106742","title":{"rendered":"The New York Times Blames Crime Spike in Israel\u2019s Arab Sector on Netanyahu"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reunion68.com\/Biuletyn\/img\/algem.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"35%\"><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><span><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/08\/31\/the-new-york-times-blames-crime-spike-in-arab-sector-on-netanyahu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times Blames Crime Spike in Israel\u2019s Arab Sector on Netanyahu<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 100%;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/230710115536-new-york-times-building-1026-file-restricted.jpg?c=16x9&amp;q=h_720,w_1280,c_fill\/f_webp\" width=\"100%\"><em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">New York Times office building \/ Beata Zawrzel\/NurPhoto\/Getty Images<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When does the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;care about crime?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When it\u2019s in Israel, and there\u2019s a chance to blame it on Prime Minister Netanyahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;devoted a full print page this week to a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/29\/world\/middleeast\/israel-arab-gun-violence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">look<\/a>&nbsp;at what a headline described as \u201cGun Violence\u201d surging \u201cWithin Israel\u2019s Arab Communities.\u201d The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;reports that \u201cmany put the blame at least in part on the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which they say has done little to fight crimes against Arab citizens since taking power late last year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It\u2019s a classic example of the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;double standard, demanding more from Israel than it does from police forces or government officials in the United States. For example, a&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;news article in the same newspaper, the same day, as the one blaming Netanyahu for the Israeli Arab crime surge&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/29\/us\/politics\/francis-suarez-presidential-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;that a Republican presidential candidate, Francis Suarez, was dropping out of the race after having promoted \u201ca boilerplate G.O.P. platform in which he called to curb violent crime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When Republicans in the US aim to curb violent crime, it\u2019s \u201cboilerplate,\u201d but when Arabs are worried about it in Israel, the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<em>on it<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;doesn\u2019t completely miss the opportunity to depict the Israeli Jews as directly perpetrating violence rather than merely insufficiently preventing it. The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;article reports, \u201cThis has also been one of the deadliest years for Palestinians and Jews in the occupied West Bank. About 180 Palestinians have been killed, mostly during clashes with the Israeli military, but there have been far fewer victims of criminal violence than inside Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Compare that context paragraph to one in&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/in-new-step-toward-israel-deal-saudi-arabia-offers-to-resume-palestinian-authority-funding-9e2dcc5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the same day\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>: \u201cMore than 200 Palestinians, many of them militants, and nearly 30 Israelis, almost all civilians, have been killed this year.\u201d The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;omits the number of Israeli civilians getting killed, while the&nbsp;<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>&nbsp;does mention them. The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;saying the Palestinians were killed \u201cduring clashes with the Israeli military\u201d is subtly but distinctly different than defining those who were killed as combatants rather than as innocent civilians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">There are many places around the world where crime is surging and the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;is not interested. Many of those places lack the critical, independent, free press present in Israel, which makes it easy for the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;to borrow story ideas, with or without credit. (<em>Ha\u2019aretz<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2023-08-24\/ty-article\/.premium\/unable-to-tackle-soaring-murder-rate-in-arab-communities-israel-just-doesnt-seem-care\/0000018a-23f4-d637-afae-2bf7278b0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote the Arab crime story August 24<\/a>, and Palestinian Media Watch foreshadowed it August 9 (\u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/08\/09\/palestinian-libel-israeli-strategy-is-to-have-israeli-arabs-murder-each-other\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Palestinian Libel: Israeli Strategy Is to Have Israeli Arabs Murder Each Other<\/a>.\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;did devote an&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/series\/chicago-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extended 2016 series<\/a>, with at least 17 reporters involved, to gun violence in Chicago. I searched the thousands of words and didn\u2019t find a single reference to President Obama, who was in the White House at the time and would have been a parallel to the 2023&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;blaming Netanyahu for criminal violence in Israeli cities. The&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;did try to hold at least one government official accountable for the Chicago violence: the city\u2019s mayor, Rahm Emanuel. Emanuel volunteered to help the Israel Defense Forces during the 1991 Gulf War, and his middle name is \u201cIsrael.\u201d Perhaps that explains the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;interest?<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong> was managing editor of&nbsp;The Forward&nbsp;and North American editor of&nbsp;The Jerusalem Post.
