Screenshot<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin told \u201c60 Minutes\u201d in an interview that aired on Sunday that \u201cmore than half of Israelis\u201d feel that the country\u2019s judicial system is against them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>CBS News<\/em>\u00a0show\u2019s report was based on a visit by \u201c60 Minutes\u201d anchor Leslie Stahl to Israel in August to investigate Israel\u2019s judicial reform and the ongoing protests that have swirled around it for the past nine months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOf course, I respect the opinions of those who see my reform as something that could do any harm,\u201d said Levin, who has led the government\u2019s reform effort. \u201cBut I can assure you that the fears are completely baseless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"60 Minutes travels to Israel to report on historic protests\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kt3aVD8HLXc\" width=\"680\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe current situation in Israel is [that] the judicial system is completely controlled by a group, an elite group\u2014more than half of the Israeli population finds itself as if the judicial system is something that is almost against them,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Stahl opened the segment by referring to the government\u2019s reform push as a \u201cjudicial overhaul,\u201d stating, \u201cThis legislation would weaken the Supreme Court\u2019s power, eliminating checks and balances put upon the government\u2019s authority.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Stahl focused the segment on Achim L\u2019Neshek, or \u201cBrothers in Arms,\u201d a group of IDF reservists who oppose the reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMembers of the group brought their skills, common military backgrounds and extreme dedication to the cause,\u201d she reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ahead of his departure to the United States on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lashed out against anti-reform protesters, saying they are \u201cjoining forces with the PLO and Iran\u201d in harming the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe protesters have made blocking roads a normal event, refusal [to serve in the military] normal, and they are defaming Israel before the world,\u201d said Netanyahu. \u201cI was the head of the opposition and I did not slander Israel before the world,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">His comments, and the airing of the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d segment, come on the heels of last week\u2019s contentious Supreme Court hearing on petitions asking to strike down an amendment to Basic Law: The Judiciary the Knesset passed on July 24.
