Former Pink Floyd vocalist Roger Waters on Friday issued another full-throated denial of the accusation that he is antisemitic, one day after the release of a damning documentary in which close former colleagues of the musician detailed his record of antisemitic barbs<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a black-and-white video posted to the X\/Twitter social media platform, Waters answered a series of questions posed by his fans. One fan, Tamara Saif \u2014 whose last name was mispronounced by Waters as \u201cSalf\u201d \u2014 asked him about his recent experience in Germany, where his five city tour earlier this year was met with protests<\/a> from the German Jewish community as well as politicians across the spectrum.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waters then read out Saif\u2019s comment that the allegations of antisemitism he has faced are \u201csenseless,\u201d as he had \u201cmerely been standing up to colonialism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOoh, Tamara, I\u2019m beginning to love you, babe,\u201d Waters gushed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Responding to Saif\u2019s request for advice as a Palestinian in Germany who \u201cwants to fight for the rights of her people without facing such allegations,\u201d Waters answered, \u201cyou have to ignore the allegations, Palestinian or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Waters claimed that he knew \u201cIsraelis in Germany who stand up for Palestinian rights,\u201d going on to charge that they had been \u201cattacked\u201d by the German police as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not allowed to gather together in public if you\u2019re in the BDS [the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement targeting Israel],\u201d Waters asserted. He alleged that German law gave the police \u201ca free hand to throw tear gas at you and beat you over the head with a baton if you gather in the street with a Palestinian flag to complain about the apartheid state of the occupation in Palestine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Waters did not cite any examples of where such police brutality against BDS supporters occurred. While the Bundestag, Germany\u2019s parliament, passed a resolution with cross-party support in May 2019 branding the BDS movement as \u201cantisemitic,\u201d elements of the judiciary have declined to prevent pro-BDS events from being staged on the grounds of freedom of speech. Indeed, Waters\u2019 own concert tour this year benefited from this approach when an attempt to cancel his appearance in Frankfurt was overturned on appeal<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

More broadly, antisemitic offenses have risen markedly in Germany over the last decade, with at least five incidents reported on a daily basis. Many experts believe the true number is five times higher<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waters urged Saif to \u201cjust keep doing what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cThat\u2019s all you can do, don\u2019t give in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The documentary released on Thursday \u2014 titled \u201cThe Dark Side of Roger Waters\u201d \u2014 features extensive interviews with legendary producer Bob Ezrin and saxophonist Norbert Statchel, both of whom are Jewish, in which they recalled several occasions when Waters uttered antisemitic remarks. Waters has always taken offense at the suggestion that his stridently anti-Zionist views are rooted in a personal antipathy towards Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the several incidents related by Ezrin was one concerning an impromptu song that Waters wrote about Bryan Morrison, Pink Floyd\u2019s Jewish agent. \u201cI can\u2019t remember the exact circumstance, but something like, you know \u2026 the last line of the couplet was \u2018cos Morrie is a f\u2013king Jew,’\u201d Ezrin said. \u201cIt was my first inclination that there may be some antisemitism under the surface.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Statchel said that when he told Waters that his family were Ashkenazi Jews and that most of his father\u2019s relatives had been murdered during the Holocaust, the singer offered to introduce him to \u201cyour dead grandmother,\u201d launching into a hackneyed imitation of how he imagined a Polish Jewish woman might speak. On another occasion, Statchel said, Waters objected to a procession of vegetarian dishes served during a dinner at a Lebanese restaurant by denouncing the meal as \u201cJew food\u201d and demanding that the servers remove it from the table.<\/span><\/p>\n

The UK-based Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), which produced the documentary, has launched a petition calling on London\u2019s Palladium venue \u2014 owned by the famous British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber \u2014 to refrain from hosting two concerts by Waters on Oct. 8 and 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
