The screenwriter of the recently released film\u00a0Golda,<\/em>\u00a0a biographical drama about former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, said in a new interview that he hoped the movie would \u201chelp people understand\u201d Israel\u2019s history and provide some education to audience members who are critical of the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is antisemitism and there is anti-Israeli feeling, and the two crossover,\u201d Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Martin told Yahoo UK. \u201cIf the truth is told, I think that a lot of anti-Israeli feeling is antisemitism in disguise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people are talking about Israel, they usually don\u2019t know what they\u2019re talking about, and they have no sense of the complexity and the nuances of Israel\u2019s history,\u201d Martin continued. \u201cIf we are ever going to diffuse this tremendous problem, this tremendous hatred felt between these two communities, the only way it will be done will be through learning and education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Golda<\/em>, directed by Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv, stars British actress Dame Helen Mirren as Meir and focuses on the late prime minister\u2019s time in office during the Yom Kippur War in October 1973, when she was forced to make hard-pressing decisions for her country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Martin said\u00a0Golda<\/em>\u00a0is the first film about Israel in the English language that is \u201caccurate\u201d in its portrayal of the country. He added that he hoped the movie would be \u201cuseful\u201d for audiences and shed a new light on Meir, who received criticism for some of her decisions during the Yom Kippur War.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had very, very positive feedback from Israeli historians who have been saying that they felt that the movie was very accurate,\u201d he noted. \u201cSo I think we have changed the narrative, or certainly moved the narrative on with regards to Golda, and that\u2019s been very gratifying. And it\u2019s been very gratifying for her family who have always felt that. Her grandsons have always felt that their grandmother\u2019s reputation needed rescuing, and I think we\u2019re on the way to doing that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Meir died in December 1978 at the age of 80 from lymphoma.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Mirren was first cast to play Israel\u2019s first and only female prime minister in\u00a0Golda,<\/em>\u00a0criticism<\/a>\u00a0piled up about the casting of a non-Jewish actress to play an iconic figure in Israel\u2019s history. The film\u2019s director\u00a0defended the decision<\/a>\u00a0ahead of the film\u2019s world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February.<\/span><\/p>\n

Martin also weighed in on the issue, telling Yahoo UK: \u201cI don\u2019t think that argument that only Jewish people should play Jews holds water.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just think if someone has done a really, really good job, that\u2019s all that matters. I\u2019m only really interested in talent, I\u2019m not interested in people\u2019s identity,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe fact she\u2019s not Jewish, did that stop her from inhabiting this character? I don\u2019t think so, her family don\u2019t think so, and the audience don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
