The USS\u00a0Mason<\/em>\u00a0and allied ships have recovered the Israel-linked\u00a0Central Park<\/em>\u00a0tanker, which an \u201cunknown entity\u201d hijacked in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the rescue operation, five armed hijackers attempted to flee in a small boat and were detained by the U.S. Navy. The 22-member crew of the\u00a0Central Park<\/em>\u00a0was uninjured, according to CENTCOM.<\/span><\/p>\n

Concurrently, two ballistic missiles were launched towards the USS\u00a0Mason<\/em>\u00a0from areas controlled by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The missiles fell 10 nautical miles away from the vessel, causing no injuries or damage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaritime domain security is essential to regional stability,\u201d said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander. \u201cWe will continue to work with allies and partners to ensure the safety and security of international shipping lanes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/em>Zodiac Maritime ship management company, part of Israeli billionaire\u00a0Eyal Ofer<\/a>\u2019s Zodiac Group, had called the attack on the\u00a0Central Park<\/em>\u00a0\u201ca suspected piracy incident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to thank the coalition forces who responded quickly, protecting assets in the area and upholding international maritime law,\u201d said Zodiac Maritime on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the company, the Turkish-captained vessel has a multinational crew consisting of Russian, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Indian, Georgian and Filipino nationals.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ship is carrying phosphoric acid.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t immediately clear who was behind the hijacking. Aden is held by forces allied to Yemen\u2019s internationally recognized government and a Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen\u2019s Iranian-backed\u00a0Houthi<\/a>\u00a0rebels.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to global maritime risk management firm\u00a0Ambrey, the hijackers had threatened to attack the\u00a0Central Park<\/em>\u00a0if it did not divert to the Red Sea port city of Al-Hudaydah, which is controlled by the Houthis.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday, an Iranian drone attacked an Israeli-owned commercial vessel in the Indian Ocean. The attack on the CMA CGM\u00a0Symi<\/em>\u00a0container ship came a week after\u00a0Houthi<\/a>\u00a0rebels hijacked an Israeli-linked ship in the Red Sea.<\/span><\/div>\n

On Nov. 19, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the\u00a0Houthis<\/a>\u00a0hijacked the Bahamian-flagged\u00a0Galaxy Leader<\/em>\u00a0vehicle carrier, calling it a \u201cvery grave incident of global consequence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe ship departed Turkey on its way to India, staffed by civilians of various nationalities, not including Israelis. It is not an Israeli ship,\u201d the military added. The\u00a0Galaxy Leader<\/em>\u00a0is registered by a British company partially owned by Israeli tycoon Abraham Ungar.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is another act of Iranian terrorism and constitutes a leap forward in Iran\u2019s aggression against the citizens of the free world, with international consequences regarding the security of the global shipping lanes,\u201d the Prime Minister\u2019s Office in Jerusalem said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel has bolstered its naval presence in the\u00a0Red Sea<\/a>\u00a0area following repeated missile and drone attacks from Yemen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The IDF said that missile boats were deployed \u201cin accordance with the assessment of the situation, and as part of the increased defense efforts in the region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On Nov. 9,\u00a0Houthi<\/a>\u00a0rebels fired a ballistic missile at Eilat, which was intercepted by Israel\u2019s Arrow 3 in the aerial-defense system\u2019s first operational use.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Oct. 31, Israel\u2019s\u00a0Arrow\u00a02<\/a>\u00a0air defense system for the first time intercepted a surface-to-surface missile fired from the Red Sea area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, dozens of U.S. troops have been wounded in more than 60 attacks by Iranian-backed proxies in Iraq and Syria since Oct. 17, according to the Pentagon.<\/span><\/p>\n

In response, the\u00a0U<\/a>nited States<\/a>\u00a0has on at least three occasions struck Iran-linked sites in Syria, confirming on Tuesday that it had conducted retaliatory military activity in Iraq for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, U.S. Secretary of Defense\u00a0Lloyd Austin<\/a>\u00a0ordered the\u00a0USS<\/em>\u00a0Eisenhower\u00a0<\/em>Carrier Strike Group deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean. The announcement came just after Austin completed his visit to Israel where he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement, Austin said that this was being done \u201cas part of our effort to deter hostile actions against Israel or any efforts towards widening this war following Hamas\u2019s attack on Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Strike Group includes the guided-missile cruiser\u00a0USS Philippine Sea<\/em>, guided-missile destroyers\u00a0USS Gravely<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0USS<\/em>\u00a0Mason<\/em>, and Carrier Air Wing 3, with nine aircraft squadrons, and embarked headquarters staffs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Eisenhower\u00a0<\/em>CSG joined the\u00a0USS<\/em>\u00a0Gerald R. Ford<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Carrier Strike Group, which includes the\u00a0USS Normandy<\/em>,\u00a0USS<\/em>\u00a0Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage<\/em>,\u00a0USS<\/em>\u00a0Carney<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0USS Roosevelt<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The U.S. Air Force has also deployed to the region squadrons of F-15, F-16 and A-10 fighter aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe increases to U.S. force posture signal the United States\u2019 ironclad commitment to Israel\u2019s security and our resolve to deter any state or non-state actor seeking to escalate this war,\u201d said Austin.<\/span><\/p>\n
