Source: C-SPAN.<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The homepage of the University of Pennsylvania website on Saturday all but flew the Ive League school\u2019s coat of arms upside down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A dull-blue banner atop the page declared \u201cSupporting our community in times of crisis\u201d and linked to&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/supporting-our-community.upenn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another page<\/a>&nbsp;quoting Penn president Liz Magill: \u201cWe are all members of the Penn community, and we all deserve to be heard and respected. But hateful speech has no place at Penn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">That page also included university messages, a fact sheet, frequently-asked questions about free speech, community resources and a large red box containing \u201cPenn\u2019s action plan to combat antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Beneath the banner on the university homepage, a news section contained \u201cA&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/penntoday.upenn.edu\/announcements\/message-from-scott-bok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">message<\/a>&nbsp;to the Penn community\u201d dated Dec. 9 announcing, from Penn board of trustees chair Scott Bok, that Magill \u201chas voluntarily tendered her resignation as president of the University of Pennsylvania,\u201d where she will remain as a tenured law professor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Beside that message on the Penn homepage, a \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/penntoday.upenn.edu\/announcements\/message-penns-board-trustees-executive-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">message<\/a>&nbsp;from Penn\u2019s board of trustees executive committee,\u201d also dated Dec. 9, announced that Julie Platt, who was previously vice chair of the Penn board of trustees, has been named interim chair of the board. \u201cDue to her current commitment as board chair of the Jewish Federations of North America, Julie will only serve until a successor is appointed,\u201d it added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe share your commitment to this extraordinary university, and while this is a challenging time, the Penn community is strong and resilient, and together, we will move forward,\u201d the executive committee of the board wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The message didn\u2019t specify why Platt received the temporary promotion, but the&nbsp;<em>Daily Pennsylvanian<\/em>, the university\u2019s student paper, reported that Bok stepped down as board chair \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2023\/12\/penn-scott-bok-board-trustees-resignation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minutes<\/a>\u201d after Magill resigned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe world should know that Liz Magill is a very good person and a talented leader who was beloved by her team. She is not the slightest bit antisemitic,\u201d Bok wrote, per the&nbsp;<em>Pennsylvanian<\/em>. \u201cWorking with her was one of the great pleasures of my life. Worn down by months of relentless external attacks, she was not herself last Tuesday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He wrote that Magill was \u201cover prepared and over lawyered given the hostile forum and high stakes\u201d and \u201cprovided a legalistic answer to a moral question, and that was wrong,\u201d per the student paper. \u201cIt made for a dreadful 30-second sound bite in what was more than five hours of testimony.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>Pennsylvanian<\/em>&nbsp;added that Magill\u2019s resignation \u201ccomes after months of criticism of Magill and Bok over the university\u2019s response to the Palestine Writes Literature Festival, the Israel-Hamas War and antisemitism on campus\u2014along with Magill\u2019s recent statements at the congressional hearing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last week, Magill&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/house-committee-probes-university-presidents-on-campus-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a>&nbsp;during a House committee hearing on antisemitism on campus alongside the presidents of Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In her testimony, the Penn president said that it wouldn\u2019t necessarily violate Penn\u2019s policies to call for genocide against all Jews. She subsequently&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/harvard-penn-presidents-attempt-hearing-cleanup-mit-head-does-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sought to clarify<\/a>&nbsp;her remarks, as did Harvard with its president\u2019s testimony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Thursday, Claudine Gay, president of Harvard,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harvard-mit-penn-campus-antisemitism-20b8513293ee2dbaee053a6fd3f8ce7a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apologized<\/a>&nbsp;in an interview with the&nbsp;<em>Crimson<\/em>, the university\u2019s student publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last week, a donor said he would pull a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/donor-appalled-by-penns-stance-on-antisemitism-on-campus-pulls-100-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$100 million donation<\/a>&nbsp;from Penn, and he would only discuss the matter further after Magill was replaced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A nearly 285-year-old institution, Penn ranks sixth overall in the most recent&nbsp;<em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/university-of-pennsylvania-3378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rankings<\/a>&nbsp;of national universities. Its business school, Wharton, is first overall in the&nbsp;<em>U.S. News<\/em>&nbsp;rankings. As of June 30, the Philadelphia-based university\u2019s endowment is&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/investments.upenn.edu\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$21 billion<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u2018One down, two to go\u2019<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who asked the three university presidents during the House committee hearing about whether calling for genocide against Jews violated their school policies,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepStefanik\/status\/1733608373990343015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;that the \u201cforced resignation\u201d of Magill is \u201cthe bare minimum of what is required.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOne down. Two to go. This is only the very beginning of addressing the pervasive rot of antisemitism that has destroyed the most \u2018prestigious\u2019 higher education institutions in America,\u201d Stefanik wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThese universities can anticipate a robust and comprehensive congressional investigation of all facets of their institutions negligent perpetration of antisemitism including administrative, faculty and overall leadership and governance,\u201d she added. \u201cHarvard and MIT, do the right thing. The world is watching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rep. Michelle Steel (R-Calif.)&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepSteel\/status\/1733638908829745572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cno \u2018context\u2019 can justify calls for genocide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cPenn president Magill\u2019s resignation is a good start, but Harvard president Gay and MIT president Kornbluth should also resign,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAntisemitism has no place in America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cElizabeth Magill, the president of Penn, resigns after failing to denounce genocidal rhetoric against Jews as harassment. Good riddance,\u201d&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RitchieTorres\/status\/1733605805197291640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), a vocal advocate for Israel. \u201cAmerica urgently needs college and university presidents able and willing to take a morally clear stand against antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rep. Carlos Gim\u00e9nez (R-Fla.) also welcomed the resignation. \u201cFormer president Magill should take Harvard\u2019s Claudine Gay and MIT\u2019s Sally Kornbluth along with her,\u201d he&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepCarlos\/status\/1733629554369917331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cTheir failure to condemn genocide is beyond disgraceful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.)&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJoshG\/status\/1733616137038901684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;that he is glad that Magill is resigning. \u201cI\u2019ve called for the presidents of Penn, Harvard and MIT to step aside. None of them answered if calling for the genocide of Jews violated their schools\u2019 codes of conduct,\u201d he said. \u201cPenn president Magill has also allowed antisemites to speak at Penn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Road ahead<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The American Jewish Committee stated that it \u201crespects president Magill\u2019s decision to step down from her role.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe road ahead for Penn will require a clear moral vision and plan of action for combating campus antisemitism that begins with saying \u2018no\u2019 to calls for normalizing violence and genocide against Jews,\u201d the AJC stated. \u201cAs Tuesday\u2019s congressional hearing made clear, far too many university administrators have failed their Jewish communities, as antisemitism has surged not just on college campuses but across the country and around the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cUniversities are spaces that require free speech, and in order to maintain their commitment to the pursuit of truth, university leaders must do more to cultivate real conversations and disrupt anti-Zionist echo chambers,\u201d it added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Phil McGraw, the television personality known as \u201cDr. Phil,\u201d wrote that he is&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrPhil\/status\/1733616553411654061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relieved<\/a>&nbsp;that Magill resigned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis week, I viewed a highly restricted IDF video of the Oct. 7 Hamas massacre.
