Kornbluth is now notorious for her evasive&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/12\/07\/us-house-committee-launches-investigation-harvard-other-elite-universities-campus-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">response to questions<\/a>&nbsp;at the December 5 Congressional hearing about Jew hatred at MIT, Harvard, and UPenn. What many people don\u2019t realize, however, is that Kornbluth had a legacy of indifference towards antisemitism during her time at Duke University, where she was Provost before her move to MIT in January of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One of the most egregious examples of her behavior involves Kornbluth\u2019s handling of the Duke University Press (DUP). In late 2017, DUP published Jasbir Puar\u2019s infamous and poorly written&nbsp;<i>Right to Maim,&nbsp;<\/i>in which&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/paw.princeton.edu\/article\/book-assigned-princeton-course-criticized-antisemitic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Puar<\/a>&nbsp;uses inscrutable and bizarre language to claim that Israelis \u2014 i.e. Jews \u2014 intentionally maim \u201cPalestinians\u201d in order to control them and use them for economic gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When Jewish faculty at Duke wrote a letter of concern to Duke\u2019s President Vincent Prince, he brushed them off, saying the book would be judged \u201cin the court of public opinion.\u201d He passed the buck to Sally Kornbluth, since the DUP reported to her as Provost. He promised that she would evaluate \u201cthe issues\u201d and \u201chow the editorial board is selected and how diversity of thought and expertise is ensured going forward.\u201d Kornbluth did nothing of the kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kornbluth took no action on Puar\u2019s book, and DUP continued to publish material dehumanizing Jews and erasing Jewish historic ties to the land of Israel. Examples include&nbsp;<i>The Colonizing Self Or, Home and Homelessness in Israel\/Palestine,&nbsp;<\/i>which accuses Israelis of living in \u201cPalestinian\u201d homes, and&nbsp;<i>Palestine Is Throwing a Party and the Whole World Is Invited,&nbsp;<\/i>which claims that investment policies maintain the \u201coccupation\u201d and subordination of \u201cPalestine\u201d in relation to Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jewish faculty learned in early 2022 that additional problematic publications were planned, such as&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/invited-to-witness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Invited to Witness<\/i><\/a><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/invited-to-witness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>&nbsp;Solidarity Tourism across Occupied Palestine&nbsp;<\/i><\/a>and a&nbsp;<i>Detours: A Decolonial Guide to Palestine,<\/i>&nbsp;both of which ignore Jewish presence and relationship to Israel. The faculty members requested a meeting with the DUP director, to include Kornbluth. She did not show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Many believed over the years that since Kornbluth is Jewish, she would support our community \u2014 but they were wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In 2019, Duke and the University of North Carolina hosted a conference on Gaza that was rife with antisemitism. A civil rights complaint was filed, requiring Duke to&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Diaspora\/Antisemitism\/Duke-University-to-tackle-antisemitism-on-campus-following-ZOA-complaint-611447\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">address its antisemitism problem<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kornbluth was silent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Also in 2019, Duke\u2019s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter held its Israeli Apartheid Week. Speakers included local students who visited leaders of the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2019\/04\/09\/what-happened-during-dukes-israeli-apartheid-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">terrorist group.&nbsp;<\/a>the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Speakers called Israel a \u201cwhite supremacist nation\u201d and invited students to sign up for more Eyewitness Palestine trips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kornbluth was silent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In November 2021, approval of a new Students Supporting Israel (SSI) chapter was<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dukechronicle.com\/article\/2021\/11\/duke-university-students-supporting-israel-ssi-veto-student-government-dsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&nbsp;vetoed<\/a>&nbsp;by the Duke Student Government (DSG), when an SSI member dared to push back on the false \u201csettler colonial\u201d narrative about Israel. SSI was eventually reinstated, but only after the DSG was called out for their discriminatory behavior. Price and Kornbluth ignored the plight of Jewish students and Duke\u2019s role in enabling antisemitism,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiZ4drn7piDAxXMKEQIHTjsCVUQFnoECA4QAw&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thefire.org%2Fnews%2Ftoo-little-too-late-duke-promises-provide-options-students-supporting-israel-club-denied&amp;usg=AOvVaw1K-6XomJL3eiAlitYhP-TN&amp;opi=89978449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saying that<\/a>&nbsp;DSG\u2019s actions are \u201cindependent of, and not determined by or sanctioned by the University.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In 2022, Mohammed El-Kurd \u2014 who claims that \u201cZionists have an unquenchable thirst for Palestinian blood\u201d and feed on organs of \u201cPalestinians\u201d \u2014 spoke to a large audience at Duke. He&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.timesofisrael.com\/antisemitic-speaker-at-duke-university-mocks-jewish-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mocked Jewish students<\/a>, crumpling up their fliers on stage as the audience laughed. Many individuals and organizations reached out to Duke president Price. Price did nothing \u2014 and Kornbluth was silent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So, what&nbsp;<em>did<\/em>&nbsp;Kornbluth say publicly about antisemitism on campus? She signed a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dukechronicle.com\/article\/2022\/02\/02032022-jewishfaculty-open-letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;denying its existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It comes as no surprise, then, that Kornbluth denies antisemitism at MIT, just as she did at Duke. Her intransigence is beyond redemption.
