Photo: X\/Twitter screenshot<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A group of Utah rabbis were told to remove signs that read \u201cI\u2019m a Jew and I\u2019m proud\u201d from a professional basketball game on Monday night because they were distracting the players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rabbi Avremi Zippel and three other rabbis brought the signs to the Delta Center to watch the home-team Utah Jazz face the Dallas Mavericks. The signs were meant to protest Kyrie Irving, now a Mavericks player, who was suspended in 2022 by a former team for tweeting a link to a movie widely considered to be antisemitic. That\u2019s just disappointing to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zippel, who noted he will remain a supporter of the Jazz, told the\u00a0<em>Deseret News<\/em>\u00a0that the NBA team has over the years shown strong support for the local Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Jazz beat the Mavericks 127-90 on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In November,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/11\/20\/nba-star-kyrie-irving-wears-palestinian-keffiyeh-post-game-press-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Irving stirred controversy<\/a>\u00a0by wearing a black and white keffiyeh, a traditional headscarf worn in the Middle East that has become known as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinians against Israel. He also posted\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CzwmE1iPPpf\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a photo<\/a>\u00a0on Instagram of himself wearing the headscarf as he walked around the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington, DC, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cz2X1ZWuVai\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accepted a Palestinian flag<\/a>\u00a0as a gift from a basketball fan at a recent game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Irving\u2019s decision to wear a keffiyeh garnered significant attention on social media, with pro-Israel supporters lambasting him for doing so amid Israel\u2019s ongoing war with Hamas following the Palestinian terror group\u2019s Oct. 7 massacre in southern Israel. The onslaught was the biggest single-day slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since Oct. 7, Irving has shared pro-Palestinian messages on social media. The athlete \u2014 who likes to go by his Native American name \u201cH\u00e9l\u00e0\u201d online \u2014 has more than once reposted tweets about genocide and \u201ccrimes of the empire,\u201d seemingly referring to Israel, by an account on X\/Twitter called \u201cEnd All Colonialism, Free Palestine.\u201d He also shared messages about the US funding Israel\u2019s alleged \u201cgenocidal massacre\u201d in the Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This was not the first time that Irving embroiled himself in a controversy involving accusations of antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In Oct. 2022, while playing for the Brooklyn Nets, Irving tweeted a link to a film that promoted antisemitic disinformation, including conspiracy theories and Holocaust denial. The Brooklyn Nets suspended him for five games when he did not immediately apologize \u2014 and even defended himself \u2014 for sharing the movie and failing to \u201cdisavow antisemitism when given a clear opportunity to do so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The NBA star\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/11\/04\/nba-kyrie-irving-apologizes-after-suspension-says-hes-fighting-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">later apologized<\/a>\u00a0on Instagram for sharing details about a film that \u201ccontained some false antisemitic statements, narratives, and language that were untrue and offensive to the Jewish Race\/Religion.\u201d He said he opposed all forms of hatred and would donate $500,000 toward organizations that combat hate.
