Pro-Hamas activists are threatening to stop buying from McDonald\u2019s after a franchisee in Malaysia filed a lawsuit against a local group pushing the anti-Israel boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement, which the company claims is damaging its business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gerbang Alaf Restaurants, the license holder of McDonald\u2019s in the Muslim-majority country,\u00a0filed a lawsuit<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at a Kuala Lumpur court on Dec. 19, claiming that BDS Malaysia has defamed the company and incited the public to boycott the fast food brand. The boycott has allegedly led to a loss of profit and job cuts, among other damages. McDonald\u2019s Malaysia is seeking $1.311 million from BDS Malaysia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The BDS movement seeks to isolate Israel from the international community as a step toward the Jewish state\u2019s eventual elimination.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we understand and respect that the act of boycotting is an individual decision, we believe that it should be based on true facts and not false allegations,\u201d McDonald\u2019s Malaysia said in a released statement. Meanwhile, BDS Malaysia\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that it \u201ccategorically denies\u201d defaming the company with its anti-Israel boycott efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Social media users supportive of the anti-Israel boycott slammed McDonald\u2019s Malaysia for filing the lawsuit and have threatened to start boycotting the company because of it. One user on X\/Twitter wrote, \u201cI haven\u2019t been boycotting McDonald\u2019s [but] if McDonald\u2019s proceeds with the suit against BDS Malaysia, I will start boycotting them for real.\u201d Another tweeted: \u201cHow can this entity even think this action will endear the brand to Malaysians? Bye McD.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A separate X user said the lawsuit is \u201cmore reason to boycott\u201d McDonald\u2019s Malaysia, while the\u00a0South China Morning Post<\/em>\u00a0cited another social media user who said the fast food company has \u201clost a customer for life\u201d for initiating the lawsuit.<\/span><\/p>\n

BDS Malaysia said it will let the lawsuit go to court and has spoken with lawyers about the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n

UPDATE<\/strong>: An earlier version of this article incorrectly reported that BDS Malaysia accused McDonald\u2019s Malaysia of supporting Israel\u2019s \u201cgenocidal war against Palestinians in Gaza.\u201d While the group has lambasted Israel\u2019s war against Hamas in Gaza, it has not made such an accusation against McDonald\u2019s.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
