Source: 365 Focus Photography\/Shutterstock<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Friday, Harvard University\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/president\/news\/2024\/announcement-of-presidential-task-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0twin presidential task forces: one on antisemitism and one on Islamophobia. \u201cReports of antisemitic and Islamophobic acts on our campus have grown, and the sense of belonging among these groups has been undermined,\u201d wrote Alan Garber, Harvard\u2019s interim president. \u201cWe need to understand why and how that is happening\u2014and what more we might do to prevent it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One of two co-chairs of the school\u2019s Presidential\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/task-force-on-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Task Force<\/a>\u00a0on Combating Antisemitism is Derek Penslar, a Jewish history professor at the school. That appointment drew harsh criticism from former Harvard president Lawrence Summers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI have lost confidence in the determination and ability of the Harvard Corporation and Harvard leadership to maintain Harvard as a place where Jews and Israelis can flourish,\u201d Summers\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LHSummers\/status\/1749155870284693775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0of the announcement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe previously touted advisory committee has disbanded without any ripple, except for the resignation in frustration with the Harvard administration of its most respected member,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/rabbi-david-wolpe-i-am-hopeful-that-harvard-is-not-a-lost-cause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rabbi David Wolpe<\/a>,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Summers called Penslar \u201ca profound scholar of Zionism and a person of goodwill without a trace of personal antisemitism who cares deeply about Harvard,\u201d but said that given his record, the professor \u201cis unsuited to leading a task force whose function is to combat what is seen by many as a serious antisemitism problem at Harvard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Harvard was ranked the worst for Jew-hatred among 100 schools by AMCHA, and there is Title VI litigation against the academic institution for antisemitism, Summers noted. \u201cNote also that Harvard has suffered worse admissions drop off than any major university in memory because of the events of last semester,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Penslar has \u201cpublicly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/01\/20\/news\/chair-of-harvards-new-task-force-accused-of-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minimized<\/a>\u00a0Harvard\u2019s antisemitism problem, rejected the definition used by the U.S. government in recent years of antisemitism as too broad, invoked the need for the concept of settler colonialism in analyzing Israel, referred to Israel as an apartheid state and more,\u201d Summers said. \u201cWhile he does not support BDS, he has made clear that he sees it as a reasonable position.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Those views aren\u2019t, to Summers, a problem for a Harvard professor or a task force member, \u201cbut for the co-chair of an antisemitism task force that is being paralleled with an Islamophobia task force it seems highly problematic,\u201d he said. \u201cCould one imagine Harvard appointing as head of anti-racism task force someone who had minimized the racism problem or who had argued against federal anti-racism efforts? This is yet another example of a double standard between antisemitism and other forms of prejudice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier this month six students\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/six-jewish-students-sue-harvard-for-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sued<\/a>\u00a0Harvard, claiming that the antisemitic atmosphere violated their civil rights.
