Credit: Jonathan Weiss\/Shutterstock.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Indiana state House\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2024\/bills\/house\/1002\/actions\">voted<\/a>\u00a0unanimously on Friday to approve an amended antisemitism bill, which includes the text of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s working definition of antisemitism but\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/pdf-documents\/123\/2024\/house\/bills\/HB1002\/ccrs\/HB1002.03.COMS.CCH001.pdf\">not<\/a>\u00a0its accompanying 11 examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">House Bill 1002, which now heads to Governor Eric Holcomb, a Republican, originally had the IHRA contemporary\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.holocaustremembrance.com\/resources\/working-definitions-charters\/working-definition-antisemitism\">examples<\/a>, but the state Senate\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/indiana-house-bill-defining-jew-hatred-heads-to-senate\/\">removed<\/a>\u00a0them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOur Jewish students need to feel safe and welcome in our schools, and our goal with House Enrolled Act 1002 is to support Jewish communities by targeting antisemitism in K-12 classrooms and on college campuses,\u201d Chris Jeter, a Republican Indiana state representative, told JNS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m thankful we included the reference to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which is a critical piece of this legislation, and got it through the finish line,\u201d Jeter added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Aaron Freeman, a state senator who sponsored the bill, said after the Senate voted on Tuesday that he was \u201cfrankly disappointed that it\u2019s not everything that I would want this bill to be,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Indiana Capital Chronicle\u00a0<\/em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/indianacapitalchronicle.com\/2024\/03\/05\/contentious-antisemitism-bill-passes-indiana-senate-heads-for-further-negotiations-in-house\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cPolitics is about what\u2019s possible. And this is what is possible. It\u2019s a very strong definition of antisemitism,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mike Speedy, an Indiana state representative,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMikeSpeedy\/status\/1765480996789526677\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday, \u201cI was proud to coauthor HB 1002 to support and protect Jewish students in Indiana.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWithout the reference to IHRA which was removed in the Senate, the bill is useless and ineffective,\u201d he added. He urged the Indiana General Assembly to \u201creinsert IHRA and combat antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Friday, Speedy, a Republican,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMikeSpeedy\/status\/1766202148512034889\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cI am thankful that the IGA has agreed that antisemitism has no place in Indiana, and the IHRA reference and definition was incorporated into the final version.
