There is no freedom of the press in Gaza. If journalists don\u2019t follow Hamas\u2019 guidelines for press coverage, they are arrested, beaten, and\/or tortured.<\/span><\/p>\n

These are not controversial statements; they are based on reports from Freedom House<\/a>, Reporters Without Borders<\/a>, Human Rights Watch<\/a>, and Amnesty International<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

When journalist Hajar Harb revealed doctors in Hamas\u2019 Gaza Health Ministry were arranging illegal medical transfers out of Gaza for Palestinians who did not require medical treatment \u2014 and profiting off of them \u2014 she was harassed and threatened<\/a> by both the police and <\/i>by the doctors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fouad Jarada was arrested for writing a Facebook post<\/a> critical of Hamas\u2019 patron, Qatar. He was beaten and whipped during his detention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ismael el-Bozom was arrested and beaten<\/a> for \u201cdrawings and writings critical of Hamas\u201d that were uploaded to his Facebook account.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Amer Balousha was arrested for \u201cMisuse of Technology\u201d<\/a> \u2014 a crime that does not exist in Palestinian law \u2014 for daring to post about corruption among Hamas leaders. He was beaten in custody and told, \u201cIt\u2019s forbidden to write against Hamas, we will shoot you.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2014, the Foreign Press Association called out Hamas<\/a> for having \u201charassed, threatened or questioned [foreign reporters] over stories or information they have reported through their news media or by means of social media.\u201d This claim was later confirmed by a Hamas official<\/a>, who explained, \u201cthe security agencies would go and have a chat with these people. They would give them some time to change their message, one way or another<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The journalists\u2019 crime? Reporting on terrorists firing rockets from civilian areas, which meant to Hamas that these reporters were \u201ccollaborating with the occupation [i.e. Israel].\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s also why Al Jazeera immediately stopped an interview<\/a> last year with an elderly Palestinian woman in Gaza who explained that the lack of food and water in Gaza wasn\u2019t a result of aid not coming in. \u201cAll the aid reaches the Gaza Strip \u2026 Hamas takes everything to their homes,\u201d she said.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Hamas not only stifles the messaging coming out of Gaza, but actively works to shape the narrative in its favor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just this week, Uvda<\/em> \u2014 Israel\u2019s premier investigative journalism show \u2014 divulged new information<\/a> gleaned from Hamas\u2019 plan for the October 7 attack. The New York Times<\/em> previously reported on the plan, code-named \u201cJericho Wall,\u201d but Uvda<\/em> went further and revealed that Hamas always intended for journalists to \u201cjoin the brigades and broadcast the operation in real time.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Of course they did. In addition to providing important propaganda for domestic consumption, this allowed them to reframe their massacre of Israeli civilians as a heroic act of decolonization. Or, as they stated in their 18-page manifesto<\/a>: \u201cOperation Al-Aqsa Flood on Oct. 7 was a necessary step and a normal response\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamas is well aware of the power of narrative, and is actively trying to impact public opinion in their favor. And, it\u2019s working.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

With the international media largely unable to access Gaza during the war, more outlets and individuals are relying on \u201cindependent\u201d voices broadcasting on social media.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

But true independent voices are precisely the ones that Hamas has spent the last two decades silencing. Those that are left, have simply changed their message.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, when international media outlets utilize Gazan journalists, photojournalists, and freelancers \u2014 without the disclaimer that they are a mouthpiece for Hamas \u2014 they are complicit in spreading misinformation that has real world consequences<\/a> for news consumers and for Jews far beyond Israel\u2019s borders.<\/u><\/u><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Global attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions are at an all-time high. <\/u><\/u>The fuel fanning these flames is the inaccurate reporting about Israel, oftentimes based on Hamas\u2019 narrative:<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Famine. Genocide. Ethnic cleansing. Al-Ahli hospital. Stealing Palestinian organs.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

These false accusations have led to attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions from Tunisia to Dagestan. In America, antisemitic attacks are reaching \u201chistoric levels\u201d according to FBI Director Christopher Wray \u2014 and that was four months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mainstream media organizations know that the news they are getting from Gaza is compromised. It\u2019s tainted by Hamas\u2019 oversight<\/a>. Yet, they continue to amplify and legitimize these messages by giving them a platform, without even the bare minimum of a disclaimer.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, the next time you read or watch news coming out of Gaza, here is your disclaimer: Hamas approves this message.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
