Photo: Ammar Awad<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Supporters of Israel have been taking to social media to defend the Spanish fashion company Zara after it was bombarded with hate messages and boycott threats for hiring an Israeli to model its designs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Saturday, Zara posted on Instagram a carousel of<span class=\"gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C5aWVDRiQOW\/?img_index=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photos<\/a><span class=\"gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>featuring Israeli model Sun Mizrahi in some of its new lingerie looks. Zara\u2019s Instagram account has 61.1 million followers and soon after the post went live, haters of Israel \u2014 including backers of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against the Jewish state \u2014 flooded the comments section. They wrote \u201cboycott Zionism\u201d and \u201cFree Palestine,\u201d called on shoppers to stop purchasing Zara goods, accused the fashion retailer and model of supporting genocide, and shared the emoji of the Palestinian flag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn [sic] sure she k!lled babies every single Zionist has to join IDF [the Israel Defense Forces] for some time men and women,\u201d wrote one Instagram user on Tuesday. Another comment said, \u201cI guess after trying to turn Gaza slaughter &amp; genoside [sic] into a fashion statement, makes sense to be supporting an apartheid model. Anyone has any doubt left the level of complicity here &amp; what role Zara would have placed back during holocaust &amp; SA [South Africa] apartheid?!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, pro-Israel activists refused to remain silent and also took to the comments section. Some shared the emoji of the Israeli flag, while others said \u201cI stand proudly with Israel\u201d and applauded Zara for working with Mizrahi. Many additionally noted that the model\u2019s nationality should be irrelevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cGreat photoshoot that makes me want to buy the whole collection. And to all the commenters from both sides: who gives a flying fk about the origin of the model?\u201d wrote one Instagram user on Sunday. \u201cLet beauty be beauty, wherever it comes from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cShe is just human being, a woman, and not a nationality or ethnicity or a political statement,\u201d wrote another Instagram user. \u201cShe is just a woman with Zara clothes on. She was first a fashion design student before becoming a model and was\u00a0ranked by\u00a0<em>Vogue<\/em>\u00a0as number one on a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/slideshow\/11-standout-models-of-spring-summer-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a list<\/a>\u00a0of 11 \u201cstandout models\u201d for the spring-summer 2023 season.
