The Israeli government will decide within the next 72 hours whether to launch a military operation to eliminate Hamas\u2019s terror battalions in Gaza\u2019s southernmost city of Rafah,\u00a0Ynet<\/em>\u00a0reported on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi has reportedly approved final plans for the operation, which will be accompanied by the evacuation of the city\u2019s Palestinian civilian population.<\/span><\/p>\n

IDF forces are amassed along the border waiting for the green light to destroy the four Hamas battalions holed up in the city\u2014Yabna (South), Shaboura (North), Tel Sultan (West) and East Rafah.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. President\u00a0Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his administration will not support a major offensive against the terrorist group in\u00a0Rafah. Instead, the White House favors a\u00a0limited operation<\/a>\u00a0aimed at attacking high-value Hamas targets and securing the Gaza-Egypt border.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biden would consider\u00a0limiting \u201ccertain arms sales to Israel\u201d if the IDF launches a ground operation in the city, the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0reported last week.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a new Harvard CAPS Harris poll, 72% of Americans believe Israel should proceed with the military offensive, while 28% support Hamas\u2019s continued rule in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

Respondents were asked: \u201cShould Israel move forward with an operation in Rafah to finish the war with Hamas, doing its best to avoid civilian casualties even though there will be casualties, or should it back off now and allow Hamas to continue running Gaza?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli Foreign Minister\u00a0Israel Katz<\/a>\u00a0said on Saturday that the offensive in Rafah would\u00a0be suspended\u00a0if a deal to free abductees held in Gaza is secured.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe release of the hostages is\u00a0the top priority for us,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cif there will be a deal, we will suspend the operation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Axios reported on Saturday that the deal being discussed includes significant compromises by Israel and that, for the first time, Jerusalem is considering ending the war in the Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli Finance Minister\u00a0Bezalel Smotrich<\/a>\u00a0said on Sunday that the government will lose its legitimacy if it forgoes the Rafah mission and instead accepts the \u201chumiliating surrender\u201d proposed to Hamas during ongoing ceasefire negotiations.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a video message, Smotrich urged the premier to order the IDF to immediately enter Rafah \u201cwith all its might.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Agreeing to the terms currently on the table would be tantamount to \u201ca victory for the Nazis at the expense of hundreds of brave IDF soldiers who fell in battle. It would impose a death sentence on the [133 remaining] hostages and, above all, constitute an immediate existential danger to the State of Israel,\u201d said Smotrich.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite intense international opposition to a major offensive in Rafah, Israel has repeatedly stated that it is necessary to win the war against Hamas to ensure that the terror group is not able to regroup and threaten Israel again.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will complete the elimination of Hamas\u2019s battalions, including in Rafah. No force in the world will stop us\u2026After what [Hamas] has done, it will not do this again. Neither will it exist,\u201d Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin\u00a0Netanyahu<\/a>\u00a0said earlier this month.<\/span><\/p>\n
