US President Joe Biden\u2019s\u00a0threat to halt arms shipments to Israel<\/a>\u00a0if it proceeds with a planned military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah has drawn furious pushback from both US and Israeli officials, who charged the American president with helping the Hamas terror group.<\/span><\/p>\n

In characteristically caustic terms, former President Donald Trump \u2014 who is\u00a0running against Biden in this year\u2019s US presidential election \u2014 accused the incumbent of siding with Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCrooked Joe is taking the side of these terrorists just like he has sided with the Radical Mobs taking over our college campuses, because his donors are funding them,\u201d Trump said on Truth Social.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Biden is doing with respect to Israel is disgraceful,\u201d the presumptive Republican presidential nominee added on Thursday, while entering a New York courthouse for his\u00a0criminal trial<\/span>\u00a0over hush money payments. \u201cIf any Jewish person voted for Joe Biden, they should be ashamed of themselves. He\u2019s totally abandoned Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Biden told CNN in an interview on Wednesday that he had \u201cmade it clear that if they [Israel] go into Rafah \u2026 I\u2019m\u00a0not supplying the weapons<\/a>\u00a0that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities \u2014 that deal with that problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added, \u201cCivilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

US lawmakers, including many fellow Democrats, and Israeli officials were quick to condemn Biden\u2019s decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) told Axios he suspects Biden was \u201cpandering to the far left\u201d and that the upcoming election was \u201cdriving\u201d him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like the president to do right by Israel and recognize that the far left is not representative of the rest of the country,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) added that Israel is \u201csurrounded by danger, they need the tools to defend themselves\u201d and that the US \u201cshould fulfill our obligation\u201d by sending the weapons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) also expressed his opposition to Biden\u2019s threat, saying that the US must \u201cstand with our key ally throughout all of this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif) accused Biden of \u201cthrow[ing] away part of the package\u201d after getting legislation passed in Congress that included about $15 billion in military aid to Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBiden seems to be communicating his displeasure, and I regard these statements as a communicative act, rather than a strategic act,\u201d he said in remarks to the\u00a0Jewish Insider<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within Israel\u2019s ruling coalition, cabinet ministers took turns firing verbal salvos at the Democratic president.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael will continue to fight Hamas until its destruction,\u201d Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared on X\/Twitter. \u201cThere is no war more just than this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hardline Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said American opposition would only strengthen Israel\u2019s resolve. \u201cWe must continue this war until complete victory, despite the Biden administration\u2019s opposition,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a fellow hardliner, tweeted that \u201cHamas [loves] Biden,\u201d using a heart emoji.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to take an implicit shot at Biden\u2019s decision, posting on X\/Twitter a\u00a0portion of his speech<\/a>\u00a0at Yad Vashem, Israel\u2019s national memorial to the Holocaust, earlier this week to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we again confront enemies bent on our destruction,\u201d Netanyahu said in the clip. \u201cI say to the leaders of the world: No amount of pressure, no decision by any international forum, will stop Israel from defending itself \u2026 If Israel is forced to stand alone, Israel will stand alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant similarly did not mention Biden\u2019s remarks directly on Thursday but appeared to issue a message in response to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI turn to Israel\u2019s enemies as well as to our best of friends and say: The State of Israel cannot be subdued, not the IDF [Israel Defense Forces], not the defense establishment, and not the State of Israel. We will stand strong, we will achieve our goals \u2014 we will hit Hamas, we will hit Hezbollah, and we will achieve security,\u201d he\u00a0said at a ceremony<\/a>\u00a0to commemorate Israel\u2019s war dead.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The harsh rhetoric laid bare escalating tensions between the Biden administration and Israel\u2019s government over the latter\u2019s conduct during the war in Gaza, which was prompted by a bloody attack on Oct. 7 by Hamas in which 1200 people were murdered and another 252 were taken hostage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s warning came amid Israeli preparations for a major offensive into the Rafah area near the Egyptian border with Gaza, in a bid to destroy the last four Hamas battalions and free the 132 Israelis who are thought to be held hostage there. More than 1.2 million Palestinians are currently in Rafah, many of whom were evacuated to humanitarian zones there from the northern Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamas terrorists embed themselves within Gaza\u2019s civilian population and\u00a0commandeer civilian facilities like hospitals<\/a>, schools, and mosques to run operations and direct attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s ambassador to the United Nations warned that Biden\u2019s threat would be taken by Israel\u2019s enemies as a signal of impending victory and embolden them further.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow can we accomplish our goals of destroying Hamas and releasing the hostages if Israel is barred from entering a critical area like Rafah, which is where thousands of terrorists, hostages, and Hamas leadership are?\u201d Gilad Erdan told Israeli broadcaster Kan.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also warned that Biden\u2019s threat could erode the president\u2019s support among Jewish American voters, and noted that many are \u201chesitant\u201d after backing Biden in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

US Jewish leaders have also expressed their concern.<\/span><\/p>\n

American Jewish Committee CEO Ted Deutch said Biden\u2019s remarks as well as his threat were detrimental to the war against Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Biden should not take steps that could impair Israel\u2019s ability to prevent Hamas from attacking it again and again \u2014\u00a0as its leaders have promised<\/a>,\u201d he wrote on social media. \u201cThe US knows that defeating Hamas is critical to Israel\u2019s long-term security and to defeating the global threat posed by the Iranian regime and its proxies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) said Biden\u2019s comments were \u201cdangerous and counter to American interest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
