Stopping British arms sales to Israel if it launches a ground offensive on Rafah in the Gaza Strip would strengthen Hamas, Britain\u2019s Foreign Secretary David Cameron said on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel ordered Palestinians to evacuate more of the southern city on Saturday in an indication it was pressing ahead with its plans for a ground operation, despite U.S. President Joe Biden\u2019s threat to withhold the supply of some weapons if it did so.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cameron said he did not support an operation in Rafah in the absence of a plan to protect hundreds of thousands of civilians sheltering in the southern border city.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Britain was in a \u201ccompletely different position\u201d to the United States in terms of providing arms to Israel, he said, noting that the less than 1% of Israel\u2019s weapons that came from Britain were already controlled by a strict licensing system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe could, if we chose to, make a sort of political message and say we are going to take that political step,\u201d he told the\u00a0BBC<\/em>\u2018s Laura Kuenssberg.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe last time I was urged to do that (\u2026), just a few days later there was a brutal attack by Iran on Israel, including 140 cruise missiles,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cameron said the \u201cbetter answer\u201d would be for Hamas, which controls Gaza, to accept a hostage deal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust to simply announce today we\u2019re going to change our whole approach to arms exports rather than go through our careful process, it would strengthen Hamas, it would make a hostage deal less likely, I don\u2019t think it would be the right approach,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing some 1,200 people and taking more than 250 people hostage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel responded with a military campaign in Gaza aimed at freeing the hostages and destroying Hamas, the Islamist terror group that rules the Palestinian enclave.<\/span><\/p>\n
