Photo: Provided<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">American-Israeli Hassidic rapper Nissim Black spoke to\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0on Monday about his new album dropping next month and how its tone is quite different sonically from his past projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Glory<\/em>, which will be released on July 7, is an infusion of all the different parts of Black\u2019s musical styles in one album, he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m very purpose-driven on this record and nothing sounds the same,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Love Me<\/em>\u00a0singer said. \u201cEvery time I thought I was going in one direction, I wanted to go another place and another place. And I wanted to beat myself up and say, \u2018Listen, can you just stay grounded somewhere?\u2019 It was a really honest conversation I had with myself and was like no, I can\u2019t. Because I\u2019m all of this. I\u2019m pop, I\u2019m rap, I\u2019m R&amp;B \u2026 these are the components that have shaped me musically. On this record you get almost an element of everywhere I\u2019ve ever been, musically, ever. I\u2019ve popped all over the place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Glory\u00a0<\/em>was originally intended to be released in November 2023, but the release date was pushed following the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks in southern Israel. Black has not released an album since 2019. At a sneak peak listening party for\u00a0<em>Glory<\/em>\u00a0that took place on Monday night in New York, Black played all 18 tracks from the upcoming album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cGod got me feeling that I\u2019m here for a reason,\u201d Black sings in one song. On another track, he says: \u201cYou may have to face some fears\/and you may have to shed some tears\/and you may have to change some peers\/all for you to do God\u2019s will.\u201d In another song, he sings to a friend who attempted to commit suicide, saying, \u201cI heard you tried to take your own life \u2026 how can I go on? Please just look up. Life will get better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Black told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0that a rabbi he became close with in recent years in Beit Shemesh, where the rapper lives, inspired him to name the album\u00a0<em>Glory<\/em>. A native of Seattle, where his parents were part of the hip-hop scene, Black explained that he also recently experienced a period in his life when he thought a lot about his purpose in this world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI came to the conclusion alone that it was to spread the glory of God in the world. That\u2019s what I\u2019m here [to do],\u201d said the\u00a0<em>He Is The King<\/em>\u00a0singer, who converted to Judaism in 2013. \u201cI\u2019m not here to hide it, to do it in a way where I\u2019m kind of talking about it and nobody knows what I\u2019m saying, I\u2019m the type of person where I was put here to be open about that. [And] when I went to the rabbi, he kept screaming, \u2018Glory to God. What he kept saying resonated to me, so I said, \u2018The next project I\u2019m doing, is [going to be called] Glory.\u2019 And every time I would come into the\u00a0<em>beit midrash<\/em>\u00a0[study hall], the rabbi would put me on the spot and say, \u2018Nissim, you need to make songs<em>\u00a0l\u2019kavod shemayim<\/em>\u00a0[in honor of God].\u2019 For him to be saying that about me, it was a good push.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While the songs on\u00a0<em>Glory<\/em>\u00a0discuss sanctifying the name of God, they also address other topics, such as being bullied, pretending to be something other than one\u2019s authentic self, mental health, having good friends, and \u201csticking true to who we are no matter what and allowing God to fight our battles,\u201d Black noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI was trying to capture and bottle some of the emotions and feelings that I\u2019ve had over the years,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Black\u2019s favorite track on the album is titled\u00a0<em>Ayeh,<\/em>\u00a0from the Hebrew expression\u00a0<em>\u201cAyeh Mekom Kevodo,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which means, \u201cwhere is the glory of God?\u201d In the song, Black sings about someone being in a very dark place in their life, crying out and asking, \u201cGod, where are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cEach album is representative of me, of where I am at the time, but this is just another revealed layer,\u201d he said. \u201cAlbum after album, I\u2019ve been more comfortable to use my singing voice \u2014 before I was always very shy about it. I had to strip away the idea growing up in the hood that you are either a rapper or a singer, that you can\u2019t do both. And today, there\u2019s no rules.
