It is in fact, a rational and well-calculated strategy that is pursued with surprisingly high success rates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Was that said by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Osama Bin Laden;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Timothy McVeigh; or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Canada\u2019s newly appointed Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, Birju Dattani?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The correct answer is 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The quote above is taken from a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/muslimresearchforum.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/13\/terrorism-and-the-targeting-of-civilians-under-international-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/muslimresearchforum.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/13\/terrorism-and-the-targeting-of-civilians-under-international-law\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2L96M2VNMGvz5_zQXOA-fJ\">2015 presentation<\/a>&nbsp;Dattani made to showcase his research as a postgraduate student in England at the London School of Economics, and the School of Oriental and African Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During this time, Dattani also&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-new-human-rights-chief-apologizes-for-pain-to-jewish-community-caused\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-new-human-rights-chief-apologizes-for-pain-to-jewish-community-caused\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0n4OjsWh8gz4eMAIDOwevB\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cPalestinians are Warsaw Ghetto Prisoners of Today\u201d \u2014 which linked to an article with the same title. Another tweet linked to an article suggesting a connection between Israeli actions and summary executions by the Nazis and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-new-human-rights-chief-made-academic-argument-that-terror-is-a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-new-human-rights-chief-made-academic-argument-that-terror-is-a\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw09iDSYeTJmbJOg222Re0Sp\">another occasion<\/a>, Dattani shared a stage with a member of an Islamic fundamentalist group that\u2019s banned in Britain, wants to impose Sharia law worldwide, and, of course, opposes the existence of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A reasonable observer might infer a pattern, and wonder how Dattani passed the vetting that surely must have preceded his appointment to his new post, which he\u2019s set to assume on August 8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So how did this happen?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">To begin with, Dattani had&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yukon-news.com\/news\/yukons-past-director-appointed-canadas-top-human-rights-commissioner-7393330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.yukon-news.com\/news\/yukons-past-director-appointed-canadas-top-human-rights-commissioner-7393330&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2svDUyAptiSPR-D9JhlpIh\">previously served<\/a>&nbsp;as executive director of the Yukon Territory\u2019s Human Rights Commission, and most recently, at a Toronto community college \u2014 roles that did not involve a great deal of public scrutiny.&nbsp; Moreover, he went by a different name, Mujahid Dattani, during his student days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Mistakes happen. But this is the third time in the past 18 months that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s Liberal government has stumbled into a major scandal that rocks the trust of the Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last year, it emerged that the Canadian government had awarded a six-figure&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/tnc.news\/2023\/11\/17\/laith-marouf-suspended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/tnc.news\/2023\/11\/17\/laith-marouf-suspended\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2kkg3XBGzh2zxu3iYJIy3J\">anti racism consulting contract<\/a>&nbsp;to Laith Marouf, the son of a Syrian diplomat who opined that \u201cZionism is Nazism, and Apartheid Canada was a model for both of them,\u201d and had posted this July 2021 tweet about former Justice Minister Irwin Cotler and the National Summit to Combat Antisemitism Cotler was hosting on behalf of the Canadian government:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-712219 aligncenter lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cotler1.png\" width=\"80%\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a nation of more than 40 million people, surely there was a better candidate to lecture Canada\u2019s broadcasting industry on the alleged scourge of racism than some antisemite who was spewing hate within plain sight of the nearest Google search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Canadian Ministry of Heritage has tried&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/laith-marouf-free-palestine-television\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/laith-marouf-free-palestine-television&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw07bdEjfhgSN5lFedjRxe0f\">to recover the money<\/a>&nbsp;it paid to Marouf, but since he\u2019s currently living in Lebanon and busy running \u201cFree Palestine Television,\u201d a venture he launched after the October 7 Hamas massacre, the prospect for getting anything back from him is beyond remote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The third low point was the government\u2019s feting of a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/10\/06\/parliament-incident-should-help-canada-explore-its-ties-to-former-nazis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/10\/06\/parliament-incident-should-help-canada-explore-its-ties-to-former-nazis\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0MbbcuBmVsfKlyjIqWArOq\">Waffen SS<\/a>&nbsp;veteran in Parliament last September, which cost the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/speaker-anthony-rota-resignation-1.6978422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/speaker-anthony-rota-resignation-1.6978422&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2lSdPJmG4K0b7q5F_0-JRw\">Speaker of the House<\/a>&nbsp;his job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">To call the relationship between Canada\u2019s Jewish community and Trudeau\u2019s governing Liberals \u201ctroubled\u201d would be a polite understatement at this point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And the government has only itself to blame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Trudeau Liberals aren\u2019t a collection of raging antisemites, but their fealty to an intersectional ideology that\u2019s hostile to the Jewish State and that sometimes bumbles into open antisemitism has given them a blind spot. Which is why, where the Jews are concerned, Trudeau and his party can\u2019t stop stepping on these metaphorical rakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to intersectional dogma, Jews \u2014 and Zionists especially \u2014 are \u201cwhite,\u201d and, as such, are members of an oppressor class that can be offended with little concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If someone seeking to be the nation\u2019s top human rights adjudicator had demonstrated bias against any other group \u2014 Black, Indigenous, trans, or Muslim, for example \u2014 that bias would have been disqualifying at the outset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If it was missed after an appointment was announced, the outrage would have been widespread, Trudeau\u2019s apology swift, and the job offer immediately rescinded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dattani is still set to assume his new role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">His appointment has been made more untenable by virtue of the fact that the job has become more important than it was a few months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An unapologetic progressive activist, Trudeau recently passed an&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.osler.com\/en\/insights\/updates\/canada-s-new-online-harms-act-c-63-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.osler.com\/en\/insights\/updates\/canada-s-new-online-harms-act-c-63-what-you-need-to-know\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3jo9tLg8xplGYQNNNNQ4l6\">Online Harms Act<\/a>&nbsp;with broad reaching powers. Some of the measures, such as new obligations imposed on social media platforms to monitor child pornography and so-called revenge porn, are unambiguously good ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But the legislation also gives the Canadian Human Rights Commission new powers to regulate \u201ccommunication of hate speech\u201d with fines of up to C$50,000 (US$36,500).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The potential chilling effect of that cudgel has always been problematic, which is why ensuring the Commission\u2019s leadership is both unbiased and seen to have unimpeachable judgment is critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One might be inclined to attribute the views publicly expressed by Dattani during his student days as the strident immoderation of youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In most other jobs, that might be a good enough explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But how would a Chief Commissioner Dattani respond to a Laith Marouf? Would his willingness to sanction Marouf be tempered by fellowship over their shared opposition to Israeli policies? Would his views be any different if instead of being an antisemite, Marouf was a white supremacist, a homophobe, or a cheerleader of militant West Bank settlers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How would Dattani view the excesses in his own rear view mirror, many of which no doubt have him cringing for reasons beyond the high-status job (which&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/orders-in-council.canada.ca\/attachment.php?attach=45696&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/orders-in-council.canada.ca\/attachment.php?attach%3D45696%26lang%3Den&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3lMgiLEfyxn1hnEg6hB3ok\">pays<\/a>&nbsp;between C$335,100 and C$394,200, plus a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chrc-ccdp.gc.ca\/en\/resources\/publications\/2021-22-financial-statements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.chrc-ccdp.gc.ca\/en\/resources\/publications\/2021-22-financial-statements&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0QApRIyxUCiQeg4BigqwZ2\">generous pension<\/a>) he stands to lose as a result of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Very few people are the sum of the worst online posts they send out into the sea of cognitive effluent that is social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But the person who is expected to deter and \u2014 if necessary, punish \u2014 that kind of behavior ought not to be someone who has online excesses of his own, which were made under a different name, and not candidly disclosed to those who vetted him for the job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">At last count, antisemitic outrages&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/hate-crimes-toronto-demkiw-update-1.7147113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/hate-crimes-toronto-demkiw-update-1.7147113&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1720156004142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1WMSttlfsThJThDOPFuWg_\">represented 56%<\/a>&nbsp;of reported hate crimes in Toronto, Canada\u2019s largest city. In such a climate, having questions of anti-Jewish bias hang over the nation\u2019s newly empowered hate crimes czar would profoundly undermine the legitimacy of the role and the prospects of success for Trudeau\u2019s new Online Harms bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Canadian Justice Department is currently investigating Dattani\u2019s past conduct.
