Photo by Majid Saeedi\/Getty Images.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Intensive American diplomacy and an increased military posture in the Middle East may have prompted Tehran to reconsider a major retaliatory strike against Israel, according to\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">White House officials told the newspaper\u2019s David Ignatius on Tuesday that they believe that President Joe Biden\u2019s efforts to stave off a wider war are paying off, at least with regard to Tehran. However, Iran\u2019s Lebanese terror proxy Hezbollah \u201cis still a wild card,\u201d the officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran blames Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week, and has threatened harsh retaliation. Haniyeh\u2019s assassination came just hours after Israel eliminated senior Hezbollah commander\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/idf-strikes-beirut-in-response-to-majdal-shams-attack\/\">Fuad Shukr<\/a>\u00a0in Beirut, and Hezbollah, too, has threatened a significant retaliation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Biden administration has been making an urgent diplomatic push to deescalate the situation, led by U.S. Secretary of State Antony\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/blinken-to-g7-iran-hezbollah-could-attack-within-24-hours\/\">Blinken<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cNo one should escalate this conflict,\u201d Blinken told reporters Tuesday, as quoted by the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019ve been engaged in intense diplomacy with allies and partners, communicating that message directly to Iran. We communicated that message directly to Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Pentagon has also sent warships and fighter jets to the region as a show of force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIran understands clearly that the United States is unwavering in its defense of our interests, our partners and our people. We have moved a significant amount of military assets to the region to underscore that principle,\u201d a senior administration official told Ignatius.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Washington \u2018outraged\u2019 by Haniyeh hit<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">White House officials responded with \u201csurprise and outrage\u201d to the elimination of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/iran-says-ismail-haniyeh-assassinated-in-tehran\/\">Haniyeh<\/a>\u00a0because they viewed it as a setback in reaching a ceasefire in Gaza, according to Tuesday\u2019s report in the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While Jerusalem has not publicly commented on the targeted killing, it informed Washington immediately afterward that it was responsible, according to the article, which cited three U.S. officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The United States has been working with Israel and other parties on an agreement to halt fighting in Gaza, which is entering its tenth month, and free the remaining hostages held by Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>, \u201cIsrael has repeatedly launched strikes on Hezbollah and Iranian commanders without first informing the United States, enraging Biden officials and the president himself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Report: Iran could attack after gathering of Islamic countries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While the U.S. officials cited by the\u00a0<em>Post\u00a0<\/em>believe diplomatic efforts are bearing fruit, Saudi Arabia\u2019s state-owned\u00a0<em>Al Arabiya<\/em>, citing U.S. intelligence sources, reported on Tuesday that Iran might be delaying a strike until after Wednesday\u2019s gathering of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/islamic-states-to-discuss-haniyeh-killing-other-alleged-israeli-crimes\/\">Islamic countries<\/a>\u2018 foreign ministers in Jeddah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The meeting was called by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at the behest of Tehran, according to the Islamic Republic\u2019s semi-official\u00a0<em>Tasnim News Agency<\/em>. Its purpose is \u201cto discuss the continued crimes of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The OIC represents 57 states and presents itself as \u201cthe voice of the Muslim world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the\u00a0<em>Al Arabiya<\/em>\u00a0report, the Americans also estimate that they will be able to help Israel \u201cdefend itself well\u201d against an Iranian attack, but are expressing concern that a massive attack by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/two-wounded-in-western-galilee-by-hezbollah-drone\/\">Hezbollah<\/a>\u00a0from Lebanon could overwhelm Israel\u2019s air defense systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Also on Tuesday,\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0reported that the United States had over the weekend observed movements in Iran possibly signaling preparations for an attack. According to the U.S. officials cited in the report, these included the movement of missile launchers and various \u201cmilitary exercises.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>White House: Ceasefire talks have \u2018reached a\u00a0final\u00a0stage\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to a White House\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/white-house-ceasefire-hostage-deal-has-now-reached-a-final-stage\/\">readout\u00a0<\/a>released on Tuesday, Biden thanked Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi during a telephone conversation \u201cfor his determined leadership in the facilitation of negotiations [toward an Israel-Hamas ceasefire] that have now reached a final stage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to elaborate on Biden\u2019s remarks during a press briefing later in the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m not going to go beyond what the president stated. We have been very clear that it is important that the\u2014the ceasefire deal, the hostage deal gets done. It has been a priority for this president for some time now,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYou\u2019ve heard from the president directly. He wants to get this done. He wants the war to end. He wants hostages to come home and to go home to their loved ones and families,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd so, we believe \u2026 the end of this war would significantly lower tensions in the region.
