Hamas has yet to respond to Israel\u2019s proposed deal, according to the Israeli prime minister\u2019s office.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

The Israeli prime minister\u2019s office said on Wednesday that Hamas has yet to respond to the Jewish state\u2019s proposed ceasefire and hostage release deal, shortly after the White House said that Israel and Hamas must compromise more.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Kirby, the White House national security communications advisor, told reporters at a briefing that ceasefire negotiations are \u201cas close as we\u2019ve ever been\u201d to achieving a breakthrough.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe gaps are narrow enough that they can be closed,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re talking about here is recognizing the fact that we\u2019ve come an awful long way. There is a good proposal before both sides, and they need to both accept that proposal so we can get this in place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked whether a deal is being impeded by Hamas or by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Kirby said that both sides must compromise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe deal hasn\u2019t been accepted, because neither side has signed up to it,\u201d Kirby said. \u201cWe believe that both sides need to do the final bit of work here, to come to a conclusion on this thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. President Joe Biden said in June that \u201cHamas is now the only obstacle to a complete ceasefire,\u201d a sentiment that other U.S. officials subsequently echoed. The change in the U.S. description of negotiations\u2014attributing a need for compromise on both sides\u2014led to widespread speculation that Israel changed the terms of the proposal, or that Israeli military actions in Gaza and the killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran may be hindering a deal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s office stated on Wednesday that Hamas hasn\u2019t responded to Israel\u2019s latest proposal. \u201cIsrael has already given a clear offer, and sent the negotiating delegation to Cairo last Saturday,\u201d it said. \u201cUntil this moment, no response was received from Hamas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also said on Tuesday that \u201cthe negotiations have now reached a final stage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sources reportedly close to the negotiations told Israeli media that they were surprised by Washington\u2019s apparent optimism on a timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n

Intense diplomacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Washington is engaged in \u201cintense diplomacy\u201d to prevent an Iranian retaliatory strike on Israel after the killing of Haniyeh, Kirby said. He reiterated the Biden administration\u2019s commitment to defending Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to see an escalation,\u201d he said. \u201cIf there is one, my goodness, we\u2019re going to be ready to defend Israel and defend ourselves as appropriate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Iranian proxy forces like Hezbollah and the Houthis had only limited involvement in Iran\u2019s ballistic missile attack on Israel in April, with Iran firing much of the ordinance from its own territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kirby added that the United States is prepared for a renewed strike from Iran to include a wider array of proxy forces.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be foolhardy for us to assume that they wouldn\u2019t be,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to prepare for all contingencies, and we are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked if Iran may have changed its calculus about retaliation in recent days, Kirby declined to comment on U.S. intelligence assessments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure as hell not capable of getting inside the supreme leader\u2019s thinking,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
