The BBC said on Wednesday that it edited out a comment by Jewish actress Miriam Margolyes about the fictional Charles Dickens character Fagin being \u201cJewish and vile\u201d from a recording of the BBC Radio 4 show \u201cFront Row.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The British-Australian actress, who is best known for playing Professor Sprout in the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d film franchise, made the comment on Tuesday while discussing her one-woman show \u201cMargolyes & Dickens: The Best Bits\u201d during a live talk at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. When \u201cFront Row\u201d host Kristy Wark asked<\/a> Margolyes, 83, who was \u201cthe first Dickens character that stuck in your head as a child,\u201d she quickly replied, \u201cOh, Fagin. Without question. Jewish and vile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her response elicited laughter from the audience. Margolyes then added, \u201cI didn\u2019t know Jews like that then \u2014 sadly I do now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The BBC told the UK\u2019s Jewish News on Wednesday night: \u201cThis was an unexpected comment made during a live broadcast which should have been challenged at the time. We have taken swift action to remove it from the program and it is no longer available.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the edited version<\/a> of the \u201cFront Row\u201d episode, Margolyes is heard saying Fagin in response to Wark\u2019s question, but the recording then skips to the actress saying, \u201cI [was] just magic-ed by the passion of him, the wickedness and the humor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fagin was the villainous Jewish character in Dickens\u2019 novel \u201cOliver Twist.\u201d Dickens described him as a cruel, ugly, and manipulative old man who teaches young children to be pickpockets and robbers so he can exploit them and profit off of what they steal. Fagin is repeatedly referred to as \u201cthe Jew\u201d throughout the book.<\/span><\/p>\n

Margolyes\u2019 comment on the \u201cFront Row\u201d radio show was condemned by social media users, including former BBC News journalist Sarah Deech. \u201cThis is plain and ugly racism, from a woman who\u2019s given a pass because apparently she is a \u2018national treasure,’\u201d Deech wrote in a post on X. \u201cThe fact Margolyes is herself Jewish is not the get out of jail free card you think it is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During \u201cMargolyes & Dickens: The Best Bits\u201d at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the actress focuses on the works of Dickens and \u201cbrings to life the most colorful and iconic characters from his timeless novels,\u201d according to a description<\/a> provided by the festival. She\u2019ll also do a Q&A with the live audience. The show, which is \u201cguaranteed to offend and delight,\u201d will take place on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Margolyes has been a vocal critic of Israel\u2019s ongoing war against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip responsible for the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks in southern Israel. She has also advocated for a ceasefire to end the Israel-Hamas war. In April, she said<\/a> Israeli military actions during the war have left her \u201cso ashamed of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, it seems as if Hitler has won,\u201d she added. \u201cHe\u2019s changed us Jews from being compassionate and caring and do unto others as you would have them do unto you into this vicious, genocidal nationalist nation, pursuing and killing women and children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2014, Margolyes told<\/a> Radio Times: \u201cI don\u2019t think people like Jews. They never have. English literature, my great love, is full of greasy and treacherous Jews.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m lucky they like me, and one always needs a Jewish accountant,\u201d she added. \u201cAntisemitism is horrible and can\u2019t be defended, but Israel is stupid for allowing people to vent [about] it.\u201d She also claimed that Israel\u2019s defensive military actions against the US-designated terrorist group Hamas were \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
