Photo: Reuters\/Yara Nardi<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Nearly 350 filmmakers, actors, and other members of the film industry signed an open letter on Wednesday, the same day as the opening of the Venice Film Festival, criticizing the prestigious festival for featuring two Israeli films.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">At the center of the controversy is Dani Rosenberg\u2019s Hebrew-language film\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.labiennale.org\/en\/cinema\/2024\/orizzonti\/al-klavim-veanashim-dogs-and-men\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cAl Klavim Veanashim\u201d (\u201cOf Dogs and Men\u201d)<\/a>, which is about the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.labiennale.org\/en\/cinema\/2024\/out-competition\/why-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cWhy War\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by director and screenwriter Amos Gitai, which will be making its world premiere on Aug. 31 out of competition. The latter film was inspired by a correspondence between Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud about avoiding war and \u201cembarks on a search for an explanation of the savagery of wars that inhabit our world,\u201d according to a synopsis provided by the Venice Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C_OCMg3tgGa\/?img_index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open letter<\/a>, published by Artists for Palestine Italia, members of the film industry claim \u201cOf Dogs and Men\u201d and \u201cWhy War\u201d were \u201ccreated by Israeli production companies that are complicit in whitewashing Israel\u2019s oppression against Palestinians.\u201d They claimed it was \u201cunacceptable\u201d for the Venice Film Festival to showcase both films and said they \u201creject complicity with the Israeli regime of apartheid and oppose the artwashing of its Gaza genocide against Palestinians at the 81st Film Festival in Venice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m \" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201c\u2018Of Dogs and Men,\u2019 shot in the midst of Israel\u2019s ongoing attacks on Gaza, whitewashes the genocide,\u201d the letter continued. \u201cLike \u2018Of Dogs and Men,\u2019 \u2018Why War\u2019 was created by complicit Israeli production companies that contribute to apartheid, occupation, and now genocide through their silence or active participation in artwashing. Palestinian society, including the absolute majority of filmmakers, has\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/bdsmovement.net\/pacbi\/cultural-boycott-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a>\u00a0for refusing to screen such productions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Among the signatories were a number of Palestinian filmmakers and actors \u2014 including two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad, Rosalind Nashashibi, Raed Andoni, and Saleh Bakri \u2014 as well as more than 80 Italian film industry figures such as screenwriter and David di Donatello nominee Davide Serino; filmmakers Enrico Parenti and Alessandra Ferrini; and actors Niccol\u00f2 Senni, Simona Cavallari, Chiara Baschetti, and Paola Michelini.
