A kosher restaurant in France was defaced early Tuesday morning with red paint and tagged with the message \u201cFree Gaza,\u201d continuing the\u00a0historic surge in antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0that has devastated the French Jewish community since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war last fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The O\u2019Laffa restaurant, which opened a little over a year ago, was targeted in Villeurbanne, near Lyon in eastern France. According to French media, the manager of the kosher establishment was preparing to file a complaint with authorities over the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese are not just tags but significant damage that reflects a very deep hatred,\u201d Cindy Fevre, 34, told\u00a0Le Figaro<\/em>. \u201cWhen you discover this, you ask yourself a million questions. Should you stay or leave? These red marks represent blood stains. It\u2019s very serious; they are death threats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The restaurant\u2019s windows and sign were also damaged in the vandalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeing the damage was both shocking and angering for Fevre, who noted to\u00a0Le Figaro<\/em>\u00a0that she employs a Muslim employee and added, \u201cIn my restaurant, the door is open to everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The defacing of O\u2019Laffa came as France has experienced a\u00a0record surge of antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0in the wake of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 massacre across southern Israel, amid the ensuing war in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fevre said that, although she has been called \u201ca few names since Oct. 7,\u201d nothing suggested she or her kosher establishment would be targeted in such a way. However, many French Jews have been targeted with violence, harassment, and intimidation over the past 11 months.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, this week\u2019s incident in Villeurbanne came days after French police arrested a 33-year-old Algerian man suspected of\u00a0trying to set a synagogue ablaze<\/a>\u00a0in the southern French city of la Grande-Motte.<\/span><\/p>\n

The restaurant vandalism also came two months after an\u00a0elderly Jewish woman was attacked<\/a>\u00a0in a Paris suburb by two assailants who punched her in the face, pushed her to the ground, and kicked her while hurling antisemitic slurs, including \u201cdirty Jew, this is what you deserve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In another egregious attack that has garnered international headlines, a\u00a012-year-old Jewish girl was raped<\/a>\u00a0by three Muslim boys in a different Paris suburb on June 15. The child told investigators that the assailants called her a \u201cdirty Jew\u201d and hurled other antisemitic comments at her during the attack. In response to the incident, French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the \u201cscourge of antisemitism\u201d plaguing his country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Around the same time in June, an Israeli family visiting Paris was\u00a0denied service at a hotel<\/a>\u00a0after an attendant noticed their Israeli passports.<\/span><\/p>\n

In May, French\u00a0police\u00a0shot dead a knife-wielding\u00a0Algerian\u00a0man\u00a0who\u00a0set\u00a0fire\u00a0to a\u00a0synagogue\u00a0<\/a>and threatened\u00a0law enforcement in the city of\u00a0Rouen.<\/span><\/p>\n

One month earlier, a Jewish woman was\u00a0beaten and raped<\/a>\u00a0in a suburb of Paris as \u201cvengeance for Palestine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Such incidents are part of an explosion of antisemitic outrages across France that has continued since Oct. 7. Last week, French Interior Minister G\u00e9rald Darmanin warned that incidents targeting the country\u2019s Jewish community\u00a0spiked by about 200 percent<\/a>\u00a0since Jan. 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTwo-thirds of anti-religious acts \u2026 are against Jews,\u201d the interior minister added, according to French broadcaster BFM TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

Darmanin\u2019s followed him stating earlier last month that\u00a0antisemitic acts in France have tripled<\/a>\u00a0over the last year. In the first half of 2024, 887 such incidents were recorded, almost triple the 304 recorded in the same period last year, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the final three months of 2023, antisemitic outrages\u00a0rose by over 1,000 percent<\/a>\u00a0compared with the previous year, with over 1,200 incidents reported \u2014 greater than the total number of incidents in France for the previous three years combined.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amid the wave of attacks, France held\u00a0snap parliamentary elections<\/a>\u00a0in July which brought an anti-Israel leftist coalition to power, leading French Jews to express deep apprehension about their future status in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems France has no future for Jews,\u201d Rabbi Moshe Sebbag of Paris\u2019 Grand Synagogue told the\u00a0Times of Israel<\/em>\u00a0following the ascension of the New Popular Front (NFP), a coalition of far-left parties. \u201cWe fear for the future of our children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The largest member of the NFP is the far-left\u00a0La France Insoumise<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cFrance Unbowed\u201d) party, whose leader, Jean-Luc Melenchon, has been lambasted by French Jews as a threat to their community as well as those who support Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite widespread concern among French Jews, senior officials including Macron and Darmanin have repeatedly said they are committing to combating antisemitism and supporting the country\u2019s Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n
