This is a distinction that you\u2019d hope and expect would be easily discernible to seasoned media professionals like the heads of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) or the editors, if that\u2019s still a thing that meaningfully exists, of\u00a0<em>Time<\/em>\u00a0magazine, which was once the flagship of objective weekly news reporting. But unfortunately, the distinction between news reporting and simple-minded propaganda is no longer a meaningful one to America\u2019s self-appointed political commissars who think that they know better than the facts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In late July, NATAS nominated a Gazan journalist and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EFischberger\/status\/1817013654715261234\">apparent member of a terror group<\/a>, Bisan Owda, for a news and documentary Emmy Award for her AJ+-produced\u00a0<em>It\u2019s Bisan from Gaza and I\u2019m Still Alive<\/em>. The docu-short, which has already\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/entertainment\/bisan-owda-documentary-1.7300955\">clinched<\/a>\u00a0Peabody and Edward R. Murrow awards, is up in the \u201coutstanding hard news feature story: short form\u201d category. The documentary presents the harsh realities experienced by the people of Gaza in the early days of the Israel-Hamas War, which was initiated when Hamas massacred 1,200 people 11 months ago in southern Israel and took 250 others hostage.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Remarkably, Bisan\u2019s eight-minute\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/741knWh3hJ0?si=GZLkXeZRBvtRYCZC\">documentary<\/a>\u00a0makes no mention of the medieval horrors inflicted upon innocent Israelis that terrible Oct. 7 day that started the war. Instead, Bisan presents her unsuspecting Western audience with a sanitized version of history in which Hamas and Gaza\u2019s other terror groups are nonexistent, even inside the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/us-intelligence-confirms-hamas-used-al-shifa-hospital-command-center\">Hamas stronghold of Shifa Hospital<\/a>, and in which she is somehow an objective journalist caught up in horrors being inflicted on innocents by Israeli \u201coccupiers,\u201d rather than an apparent adherent of a terror organization that deliberately murders innocent people, and helped bring about the events she depicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"PullQuote PullQuote--left flex flex-col items-center pt1_5 pb3 mt1_75 mb_75 border-bottom-black\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"PullQuote__text PullQuote--left__text text-center\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The distinction between news reporting and propaganda is no longer a meaningful one to America\u2019s self-appointed political commissars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even more troubling than the bizarre absence of Hamas in Bisan\u2019s documentary and the subsequent episodes released by AJ+ from the standpoint of basic journalistic ethics and practice, is what she does choose to show. Interspersed throughout the footage of the immense and genuine human suffering in Gaza is propaganda straight from the Hamas media office. By deliberately mixing truth with lies, such as the assertion that \u201cwomen, children, and the elderly make up 73% of the dead in Gaza,\u201d numbers that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/fathomjournal.org\/statistically-impossible-a-critical-analysis-of-hamass-women-and-children-casualty-figures\/#:~:text='The%2520cumulative%2520number%2520of%2520martyrs,according%2520to%2520reliable%2520media%2520%25E2%2580%25A6).\">several experts<\/a>\u00a0have referred to as \u201cstatistically impossible,\u201d Bisan\u2019s content is purposefully designed to sway the hearts and minds of millions of viewers who don\u2019t know better toward the terrorists.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bisan takes an even less nuanced approach, however, when uploading short videos to her Instagram account for her 4.7 million followers. There, she veers into outlandish antisemitic territory, such as the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EFischberger\/status\/1826292236046541154\">grotesque allegation<\/a>\u00a0that Israel is stealing the organs of dead Palestinian children of Gaza\u2014which comes straight out the pages of age-old antisemitic blood libels. In a video from Oct. 18, the day after an explosion infamously rocked Gaza\u2019s Al Ahli Hospital, Bisan\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Cyh30IeA4D4\/?igsh=MWtma2FzeXFndGU0bQ==\">filmed herself in tears<\/a>\u00a0over the \u201c800 people killed\u201d by Israel (300 more than Hamas\u2019 number). In a now-infamous twist, the explosion turned out to be caused by an errant rocket fired by the Islamic Jihad terror group. European intelligence later placed the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/european-intelligence-source-tells-afp-a-maximum-of-50-killed-in-gaza-hospital\/\">likely death toll<\/a>\u00a0at 50\u2014or 93.75% less than the total Bisan claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ArticleView__content-switch bradford text-article-body-md font-300 mxauto\">\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The fact that this propaganda is only thinly veiled as journalism is less surprising once you take a deeper look at Bisan\u2019s background. Bisan appears to be a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terrorist organization that has\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/palestinians-in-beirut-mark-50-years-since-lod-airport-terror-massacre\/\">American blood on its hands<\/a>\u00a0and openly gloated about its participation in the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ngo-monitor.org\/reports\/pflp-involvement-in-the-october-7-atrocities\/\">mass slaughter<\/a>\u00a0in southern Israel on Oct. 7. In 2018, the PFLP confirmed Bisan\u2019s membership in the organization when it\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240727002518\/https:\/\/pflp.ps\/post\/16667\/%D8%A7%D8%AA%D8%AD%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%82%D8%AF%D9%85%D9%8A-%D9%8A%D9%81%D8%AA%D8%AA%D8%AD-%D8%B5%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%AD%D9%86%D8%B8%D9%84%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AB%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%A8%D9%84%D9%82%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D8%A8%D8%B9%D9%86%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%87\">referred to her<\/a>\u00a0as part of the Progressive Youth Union, which the PFLP\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240730093720\/https:\/pflp.ps\/post\/13466\/%25D8%25A7%25D8%25AA%25D8%25AD%25D8%25A7%25D8%25AF-%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584%25D8%25B4%25D8%25A8%25D8%25A7%25D8%25A8-%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584%25D8%25AA%25D9%2582%25D8%25AF%25D9%2585%25D9%258A-%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584%25D9%2581%25D9%2584%25D8%25B3%25D8%25B7%25D9%258A%25D9%2586%25D9%258A-%25D9%258A%25D8%25B7%25D9%2584%25D9%2582-%25D8%25AD%25D9%2585%25D9%2584%25D8%25A9-%25D8%25A8%25D8%25B0%25D9%2588%25D8%25B1-%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584%25D8%25A3%25D9%2585%25D9%2584-%25D9%2588%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584%25D8%25AA%25D9%2583%25D8%25A7%25D9%2581%25D9%2584\">explicitly acknowledges<\/a>\u00a0is its \u201cyouth framework.\u201d Two years prior, Bisan\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240911213604\/https:\/\/pflp.ps\/post\/12357\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%B9%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%BA%D8%B2%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D9%83%D8%B1%D9%85-%D9%83%D9%88%D9%83%D8%A8%D8%A9-%D9%85%D9%86-%D8%AC%D8%B1%D8%AD%D9%89-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%81%D8%A7%D8%B6%D8%A9-%D9%88%D8%B0%D9%88%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D9%87%D9%8A%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%82%D8%A7%D8%A6%D8%AF-%D8%B3%D8%A7\">hosted a PFLP event<\/a>\u00a0honoring Palestinian terrorists injured or killed in confrontations with Israeli soldiers, which included\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/english.palinfo.com\/o_post\/Massive-participation-in-funeral-of-martyr-Sami-Madi\/\">Sami Shawqi Madi<\/a>, who was the head of the PFLP\u2019s media committee at the time of his death. In 2015, Bisan was one of the speakers at a rally\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alwatanvoice.com\/arabic\/news\/2015\/12\/12\/830799.html\">celebrating the 48th<\/a><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151215001857\/https:\/www.alwatanvoice.com\/arabic\/news\/2015\/12\/12\/830799.html\">\u00a0anniversary<\/a>\u00a0of the founding of the PFLP, where she addressed the crowd while wearing a full PFLP military uniform and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gazan-filmmaker-with-ties-to-palestinian-terror-group-nominated-for-news-and-documentary-emmy\">stated<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe people of Gaza, the people in the West Bank, and in Jerusalem &#8230; will not back down at all from their cause and their revolution.\u201d Bisan also served as the \u201cmaster of ceremonies\u201d the following year\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220922115817\/https:\/pflp.ps\/post\/14375\/%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584%25D8%25B4%25D8%25B9%25D8%25A8%25D9%258A%25D8%25A9-%25D8%25B4%25D9%2585%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584-%25D9%2582%25D8%25B7%25D8%25A7%25D8%25B9-%25D8%25BA%25D8%25B2%25D8%25A9-%25D8%25AA%25D8%25AD%25D9%258A%25D9%258A-%25D8%25B0%25D9%2583%25D8%25B1%25D9%2589-%25D8%25A7%25D9%2586%25D8%25B7%25D9%2584%25D8%25A7%25D9%2582%25D8%25A9-%25D8%25A7%25D9%2584%25D8%25AC%25D8%25A8%25D9%2587%25D8%25A9-%25D8%25A8%25D9%2585%25D9%2587%25D8%25B1%25D8%25AC%25D8%25A7%25D9%2586-%25D8%25AC%25D9%2585%25D8%25A7%25D9%2587%25D9%258A%25D8%25B1%25D9%258A-%25D8%25AD%25D8%25A7\">at the 49th-anniversary rally<\/a>. In a since-deleted article published in\u00a0<em>Al-Hadaf<\/em>, the PFLP\u2019s official newspaper, Bisan is lauded as \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-816346\">a symbol of resistance journalism<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Despite Bisan\u2019s open affiliation with a terrorist organization, and reporting that violates every norm of ethical journalism, NATAS has defended the nomination. Bizarrely, NATAS President &amp; CEO Adam Sharp\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/its-bisan-from-gaza-emmy-nomination-natas-response\/\">stated<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cNATAS has been unable to corroborate these reports, nor has it been able, to date, to surface any evidence of more contemporary or active involvement by Owda with the PFLP\u201d and that the \u201ccontent submitted for award consideration was consistent with competition rules and NATAS policies.\u201d Sharp\u2019s response completely ignores the ample evidence of Bisan\u2019s terror ties (including her own\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EFischberger\/status\/1833122739068055806?t=oAFJwkpa0RsQmt1rwrwPJg&amp;s=19\">confirmation<\/a>\u00a0that she participated in the PFLP rallies) and her propensity for spreading antisemitism and openly lying in the service of terrorist propaganda campaigns. In reality, multiple Gazan journalists working for Al Jazeera (which owns AJ+)\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commentary.org\/seth-mandel\/how-terrorist-state-propaganda-became-the-norm-for-u-s-audiences\/\">have been linked to terror groups<\/a>, while the PFLP and Hamas have been openly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/3037350\/how-palestinian-terrorists-train-journalists-in-gaza\/\">training journalists<\/a>\u00a0in the Strip for over a decade\u2014some of whom participated in the Oct. 7 terror attack as combatants and even held Israeli hostages in their homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Sharp, NATAS, and the other journalistic institutions who honored Bisan are virtue-signaling, yes, But they are also displaying complete ignorance as to the nature of journalism in the Gaza Strip and a callous indifference to the lives of Jews and Americans who have been murdered by Hamas and by the PFLP. Moreover, Bisan\u2019s manipulation of journalistic standards, and journalistic cover, mirrors the practices of her broadcaster AJ+, a U.S.-based subsidiary of Al Jazeera, which is funded by the government of Qatar, a longtime Hamas funder that provides safe haven for its leaders. In 2019, the media platform\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.memri.org\/tv\/al-jazeera-holocaust-denial-israel-biggest-winner-same-justification-annihilate-palestinians\">released a video<\/a>\u00a0questioning the Holocaust, and more recently, has repeatedly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ajplus\/status\/1711081625981800457\">justified<\/a>\u00a0the Oct. 7 massacre.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">AJ+\u2019s content and ties to Qatar spurred the Department of Justice to mandate that it register as a foreign agent of the Gulf monarchy in September 2020. Nearly four years later, it has refused to do so, yet has faced\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11888793\/Al-Jazeera-slammed-flouting-government-orders-register-foreign-agent-Qatar.html\">no repercussions from the Biden DOJ<\/a>. Does the academy not find Bisan and AJ+\u2019s propaganda and terror support objectionable?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div class=\"Divider Divider--dotted-rule overflow-hidden\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One of the more outrageous consequences of Oct. 7 in the journalistic universe is the refusal to reevaluate commonly held shibboleths like the idea that Israel was being too paranoid about Hamas, when in fact it wasn\u2019t being nearly cautious enough about the intentions of the foe on its border\u2014whose statements about slaughtering Jews should in fact have been taken quite literally. What has happened instead is the widespread embrace of the terrorists\u2019 own reality, which is then used to \u201cfact-check\u201d all Israelis, whether women and men who were raped, or parents whose children were stabbed, shot or set on fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Because Jews are such villains, Oct. 7 has apparently canceled normal journalistic requirements to even bother matching up quotes with transcripts of what the speaker actually said\u2014a courtesy that is especially applicable to heads of state, unless they are Israeli. In a recent cover story for\u00a0<em>Time<\/em>\u00a0magazine, correspondent Eric Cortellessa quoted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as stating that \u201cAnyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas.\u201d Yet while Netanyahu is one of the most quoted and aggressively fact-checked political leaders in the world, it is impossible to find a single quote in any public transcript or record, including Cortellessa\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7008852\/benjamin-netanyahu-interview-transcript\/\">interview<\/a>, in which Netanyahu ever said anything remotely to that effect. In reality, Netanyahu led large-scale military operations against Hamas in 2012, 2014 and 2021. While one might criticize Netanyahu for not killing enough Hamas members in those prior campaigns, that hardly seemed to be the thrust of the\u00a0<em>Time<\/em>\u00a0correspondent\u2019s conspiratorial criticism, whose point instead seemed to be that Israel had somehow sponsored the Hamas attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Time<\/em>\u2019s own \u201cfact-check\u201d of Netanyahu\u2019s statement that Israeli security agencies agreed before Oct. 7 that Hamas was deterred is also demonstrably false. Right up to Oct. 7, no Israeli security agency ever assessed that Hamas was seeking war\u2014an assessment that was enthusiastically backed by Israel\u2019s supposed Western allies, including the United States, who repeatedly pressed Israel to allow more Gazan workers into the country, to relax controls at the border, and to accommodate the terrorist group\u2019s demands for more heavy construction materials.\u00a0<em>Time<\/em>\u2019s accusation that Netanyahu has prolonged the Gaza war in order to avoid legal proceedings for personal corruption is also obviously false, as Netanyahu\u2019s trials are continuing, and political leaders in Israel have no immunity from prosecution or legal procedures while in office.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"BlockContent col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 mxauto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What NATAS, the sponsors of the Peabody and Edward R. Murrow awards, and the editors of\u00a0<em>Time<\/em>\u00a0magazine have apparently agreed on is that there should be two sets of journalistic standards: one for them, and one for Jews. It\u2019s hard to think of a more shameful development in the annals of modern journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"AuthorBioBlock col-12 lg:col-10 xl-wide:col-8 w100 mt6 mxauto\">\n<div class=\"AuthorBioBlock__container graebenbach mt1_5 text-section-details-sm font-300 color-red\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><strong>Eitan Fischberger<\/strong>\u00a0is an international relations and Middle East analyst.
