Photo: Noah Berger\/AWS\/Handout via REUTERS<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Amazon pulled a promotional video this week in which one of its senior vice presidents was wearing a necklace with a pendant in the shape of the map of Israel but with the Palestinian flag imposed on top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dr. Ruba Borno is the vice president of global specialists and partner organizations for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and was hired by the company in November 2021. She wore the controversial necklace in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HamasAtrocities\/status\/1845513343471120633\/video\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promotional clip<\/a>\u00a0for the upcoming AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe violence and loss of life happening every day in the Middle East is tragic, and at Amazon, our hearts and thoughts are with any person or community that\u2019s affected,\u201d an Amazon spokesperson told Fox Business. \u201cOur leadership remains in regular contact with our teams based in the region to offer our support. The video shot was not meant to be a political statement, but we\u2019ve taken down the video and will repost a new one in the coming days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Borno has not responded to Amazon\u2019s decision to delete the video.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/ece.engin.umich.edu\/stories\/ruba-borno-vp-of-amazon-web-services-and-ece-alum-stresses-empathy-and-accountability-in-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to<\/a>\u00a0the electrical and computer engineering department at the University of Michigan, Borno\u2019s alma mater, the Amazon executive is a \u201cPalestinian refugee who fled Kuwait during the first Gulf War with her family in 1990. Forced to abandon all their possessions and savings, her family was given just three days to evacuate to the United States, leaving behind everything they knew.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The necklace worn by Borno in the recently deleted Amazon video sparked outrage on social media. Users\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/danysipuede\/status\/1845911955552321805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criticized<\/a>\u00a0Amazon,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DWhthediverMI\/status\/1845856913264607300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vowed<\/a>\u00a0to cancel their Amazon Prime subscriptions and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/blaiklockBP\/status\/1846126704919494785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a>\u00a0for Borno to be fired. Some also<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HamasAtrocities\/status\/1845513343471120633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0that Alexander Trufanov, an employee of the Amazon subsidiary in Israel, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz by Hamas-led terrorists during their deadly rampage across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and is among the 101 hostages\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/30\/palestinian-islamic-jihad-releases-second-video-israeli-hostage-sasha-troufanov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still held captive in the Gaza Strip<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jn-donate-popup jn-donate-popup-single\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Amazon has yet to comment on Trufanov\u2019s kidnapping, but two days after the Oct. 7 terrorist attack last year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassey addressed the massacre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe attacks against civilians in Israel are shocking and painful to watch,\u201d he wrote in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ajassy\/status\/1711575743803933139?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1711575743803933139%7Ctwgr%5E2cc67024ff108b3694787f929ba0a1aed5e28d67%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxbusiness.com%2Flifestyle%2Fus-ceos-support-israel-hamas-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a>\u00a0on X. \u201cI have been in touch with our teammates there to make sure we do everything we can to help support their family\u2019s and their safety, and to assist however we can in this very difficult time. We\u2019re also in close contact with our humanitarian relief partners on the ground and will be supporting their efforts. Hoping that peace arrives as soon as possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"css-175oi2r\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Borno and her family fled Kuwait when former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invaded the country in 1990 and came to the US as refugees granted political asylum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m Palestinian, my family\u2019s Palestinian, and we were stateless, because Palestinians weren\u2019t granted citizenship,\u201d Borno said on the \u201cNo Turning Back\u201d podcast with the McChrystal Group, a global advisory services firm. \u201cAnd when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, he decreed that those [harboring] American citizens could be shot on sight.
