Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated at about 4:30 a.m. local time that he was dispatching two rescue planes to Amsterdam following a \u201cvery violent incident against Israeli citizens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe harsh pictures of the assault on our citizens in Amsterdam will not be overlooked,\u201d Netanyahu\u2019s office stated, adding that he \u201cviews the horrifying incident with utmost gravity and demands that the Dutch government and security forces take vigorous and swift action against the rioters, and ensure the safety of our citizens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Amsterdam police told JNS that \u201cseveral reports about last night\u2019s events in Amsterdam are circulating on social media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe police have launched a major investigation into multiple violent incidents,\u201d the department told JNS. \u201cSo far, it is known that five people have been taken to the hospital and 62 individuals have been arrested.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe police are aware of reports regarding a possible hostage situation and missing persons, but currently have no confirmation that this actually took place,\u201d it added. \u201cThis aspect is also under investigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The department added that there was to be a noon press conference at Amsterdam City Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Israeli Foreign Ministry initially said that there has not been contact with three Israelis in Amsterdam. It later said everyone was accounted for.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Israeli National Security Council\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0in Hebrew that Israelis in Amsterdam should remain in their hotel rooms and avoid the street, refrain from wearing visible Jewish or Israeli symbols and notify Dutch police and the Israeli mission about any threat or attack. The council also advised Israelis to return to home, with more planes expected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, Maccabi Tel Aviv lost 5-0 to Ajax Amsterdam in a Europa League game. Various reports indicated that Israeli fans were attacked\u2014with some reports of injuries\u2014after leaving the game.<\/span><\/p>\n

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands told Israeli President Isaac Herzog that \u201cwe failed the Jewish community of the Netherlands during World War II, and last night we failed again,\u201d per an Israeli readout of the call.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof\u00a0 spoke with Herzog and with Netanyahu. Schoof wrote that he was \u201chorrified by the antisemitic attacks on Israeli citizens. This is completely unacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe perpetrators will be identified and prosecuted. The situation in Amsterdam is now calm once more,\u201d he\u00a0wrote<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe informal European Council is taking place today in Budapest. The matters being discussed will include the situation in the Middle East and its impact on the wider world,\u201d he\u00a0added<\/a>. \u201cI will of course also be addressing last night\u2019s utterly outrageous and abhorrent antisemitic attacks on Israeli citizens in Amsterdam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cArrest and deport the multicultural scum that attacked Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters in our streets,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Geert Wilders, who leads the largest political party in the Netherlands. \u201cAshamed that this can happen in The Netherlands. Totally unacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA pogrom in the streets of Amsterdam. We have become the Gaza of Europe,\u201d he added in\u00a0another post<\/a>. \u201cMuslims with Palestinian flags hunting down Jews.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI will not accept that. Never,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe authorities will be held accountable for their failure to protect the Israeli citizens. Never again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, wrote that \u201cwe are receiving very disturbing reports of extreme violence against Israelis and Jews on the streets of Holland. There is a pogrom currently taking place in Europe in 2024.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the true faces of the supporters of the radical terrorism we are fighting. The western world needs to wake up now,\u201d he\u00a0wrote<\/a>. \u201cThis is the time when the United Nations should immediately and clearly condemn the violence of the Palestinians and their supporters. The Dutch authorities must take decisive action against terrorism now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that she is \u201chorrified by the attacks tonight in Amsterdam, which are terribly reminiscent of a classic pogrom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am also deeply disturbed by how long the reported attacks lasted and call on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into security force intervention and on how these despicable attacks transpired,\u201d Lipstadt wrote. \u201cIn terrible historical irony, this is happening two days before the grim anniversary of\u00a0Reichspogromnacht<\/em>\u00a0in 1938, when Nazi-sanctioned and led pogroms against Jews erupted across the German Reich.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is outrageous. The government of the Netherlands must protect Jews from these attacks and prosecute the assailants,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.). \u201cI\u2019m putting together a group of Jewish members of Congress to discuss this with the Dutch ambassador tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.)\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe hysterical and hyperbolic demonization of Israel has led to a global outbreak of antisemitic vitriol, vandalism and violence. The single most monstrous manifestation of antisemitism is a pogrom that is presently unfolding against hundreds of Jews who were cheering on the Tel Aviv football club in Amsterdam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThose inciting antisemitism now have the blood of a 21st-century pogrom on their hands,\u201d he stated. \u201cThe situation is so dire that the Israeli government is dispatching rescue teams for Jews in danger. I am sick to my stomach that a pogrom is happening in the 21st century.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.)\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201ctwo days before the anniversary of Kristallnacht, Jews are once again experiencing antisemitism and vicious attacks in Europe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply disturbed by the reports from Amsterdam, and I will continue working to stop the rise in antisemitism across the world and in America,\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA horrible pogrom in action. Where are the police? Just allowing Jews to be hunted and beaten in the streets,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.). \u201cWe will demand answers from the the Netherlands Embassy in the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What \u2018globalize the intifada\u2019 looks like<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Melissa Lantsman, a member of the Canadian Parliament and deputy leader of the Conservative Party,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe scenes from the streets of Amsterdam tonight are absolutely horrific.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what \u2018globalize the intifada\u2019 looks like,\u201d Lantsman wrote. \u201cDon\u2019t look the other way. Watch the footage and stand up against this lawless mob there and everywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthis is exactly what \u2018globalize the intifada\u2019 looks like. Mobs of hate-filled people chasing down and attacking innocent Israeli soccer fans, who they have dehumanized as \u2018Zionists,\u2019 hunting down and brutalizing ordinary people who came to Amsterdam simply to enjoy a soccer match.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe demand Dutch authorities do everything necessary to ensure the safety of the Israeli fans, work to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators and apologize for this obscene, unprovoked violence,\u201d Greenblatt wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former Israeli Prime Minister\u00a0Naftali Bennett\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that the attack \u201cseems like a planned and organized pogrom in Amsterdam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Israeli embassy in Washington\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0that \u201chundreds of fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer team were ambushed and attacked in Amsterdam tonight as they left the stadium following a game against Ajax Amsterdam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The embassy shared video footage that appeared to show someone being attacked as he lay motionless on the street and a driver intentionally driving a car into a pedestrian.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe mob, who targeted these innocent Israelis, has proudly shared their violent acts on social media,\u201d the embassy stated. \u201cResponses to this video so far have ranged from: they started it (by chanting), they deserve it (since they\u2019re Israelis), and they don\u2019t belong there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s get one thing clear: There is no justification for a lynching mob,\u201d the embassy added. \u201cIsraeli soccer fans should be allowed to support their team without fear of physical danger. The days of chasing Jews down European city streets should remain in the dark annals of history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are horrified by footage coming out of Amsterdam that shows masked assailants brutally attacking Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans,\u201d the American Jewish Committee\u00a0said<\/a>. \u201cWe urge the Dutch government to immediately act to ensure the safety of the fans and bring the perpetrators to justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Agudath Israel of America\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0that it is \u201chorrified by the scenes coming out of Amsterdam tonight\u201d which it called \u201ca modern day pogrom,\u201d in which \u201cJews are attacked by mobs of antisemites in the streets of Europe once again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the government of the Netherlands to immediately ensure the safety of Jewish people in their country and apprehend all of the perpetrators of tonight\u2019s riot,\u201d Agudah said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark Dubowitz, CEO of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cradical Islamists are tearing Europe apart, targeting Israeli Jews\u2014even at a soccer match in Amsterdam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEuropeans: If you think this stops with the Jewish community, think again,\u201d he wrote. \u201cYou\u2019re at risk of losing your countries, democracies, and way of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, David van Weel, the Dutch minister of justice and security,\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0about taking part in a Kristallnacht commemoration at Amsterdam\u2019s 17th century Portuguese synagogue. At press time, neither he nor many senior members of the government had commented on the attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAntisemitic mobs attacking Israeli soccer fans tonight in Amsterdam. Pathetic response from the authorities as Israel is sending in two rescue planes,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0David Friedman, the former U.S. ambassador to Israel. \u201cAll this in 2024\u2014three days before the anniversary of Kristallnacht!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
