President-elect Donald Trump plans to renew his \u201cmaximum pressure\u201d policy on Iran when he returns to the White House on Jan. 20, including issuing punishing sanctions and targeting Tehran\u2019s oil income.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sources briefed on Trump\u2019s early plans told\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0on Friday that the harsh measures against the regime are part of an aggressive strategy to weaken the Islamic Republic\u2019s support for its regional terrorist proxies and significantly harm its\u00a0nuclear<\/a>\u00a0ambitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former Trump officials said that his approach to Iran will likely be influenced by its attempt to\u00a0assassinate<\/a>\u00a0him. The U.S. Department of Justice charged three men on Friday who it said were involved in the Iranian plot.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople tend to take that stuff personally,\u201d Mick Mulroy, a top Pentagon official for the Mideast in Trump\u2019s first term, told the\u00a0Journal<\/em>. \u201cIf he\u2019s going to be hawkish on any particular country, designated major adversaries, it\u2019s Iran.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s team will move swiftly to try to strangle Iran\u2019s oil industry, including targeting foreign ports and people who buy and sell Iranian oil.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think you are going to see the sanctions go back on, you are going to see much more, both diplomatically and financially, they are trying to isolate Iran. I think the perception is that Iran is definitely in a position of weakness right now, and now is an opportunity to exploit that weakness,\u201d said a former White House official.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Iranian rial<\/a>\u00a0reportedly fell to a historic low following Trump\u2019s election.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his first term in the White House, Trump imposed sanctions on\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u00a0for its pursuit of nuclear weapons and took the United States out of an agreement in 2018 with the Islamic Republic forged three years earlier by his predecessor, Barack Obama.<\/span><\/p>\n

At an election rally on Tuesday, Trump said that he wants Iran \u201cto be a very successful country,\u201d but that it \u201ccan\u2019t have nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
