Photo: Screenshot<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">YouTube star Casey Neistat stopped his interview with a fellow Jewish YouTuber and content creator at his office building in New York City recently to wave an Israeli flag outside a window of his office as anti-Israel protesters demonstrated outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Neistat, who has 12.6 million subscribers on YouTube, is a Jewish New York-based filmmaker, writer, blogger, director, and star of the 2010 HBO documentary series \u201cThe Neistat Brothers.\u201d He co-founded a multimedia company called Beme that CNN purchased in 2016 for $25 million. He has talked openly on social media about\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Casey\/status\/1843351455576830278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">being Jewish<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/caseyneistat\/p\/C6MRmAar5n1\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his support<\/a>\u00a0for the Jewish community and Israel. He also condemned the \u201cbarbarism\u201d carried out by Hamas-led terrorists during their deadly rampage across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, in a YouTube video titled\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kVHGhdUDjPU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cJew\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that he published four days after the terrorist attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Nov. 2, the Connecticut-born veteran YouTuber was a guest on the YouTube show \u201cCreated,\u201d which is hosted by Jewish content creator Jon Youshaei.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bWh0ktqZNCU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The interview<\/a>\u00a0took place in Neistat\u2019s office in New York City, and toward the end of their conversation, anti-Israel protesters began loudly demonstrating outside the building. The noise interrupted the interview, and Youshaei addressed the situation on air.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"badge badge-style-type-verified style-scope ytd-badge-supported-renderer style-scope ytd-badge-supported-renderer\" role=\"img\" aria-label=\"Verified\">\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a protest outside; we hear a lot of the noise,\u201d said the host of \u201cCreated.\u201d A second later, Neistat got up from his chair, grabbed an oversized Israeli flag he had in his office, opened the window in the room, and then proceeded to wave the flag outside as the anti-Israel protesters walked by. After the demonstrators left the street, Neistat brought his Israeli flag back inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt\u2019s always something in this city,\u201d Neistat stated. \u201cI think that was some sort of pro-Palestine march. They like to go down [the street] Broadway.\u201d Explaining his decision to wave the Israeli flag outside of his window right as anti-Israel protesters walked by, he said, \u201cYou gotta show the love, you know \u2026 That was an anti-Israel march going down Broadway and when that happens I like to wave either my American flag, or an Israeli flag, or some combination of both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Youshaei afterwards asked Neistat how he feels speaking publicly about Israel despite how \u201cpolarizing\u201d the subject is. Neistat replied that it is \u201cchallenging\u201d at times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019ve never been one to hold my tongue. I think that exacerbates for me the frustration in speaking out against antisemitism,\u201d Neistat added. \u201cBecause long before I spoke out against antisemitism, I was quick to speak out for pro-LGBTQ rights. And I was very loud in speaking out in my support of African Americans and why it\u2019s important that we stand up if there\u2019s a moment in this country when our fellow Black Americans are feeling like they\u2019re being unfairly. I\u2019ve never held my tongue. So when it becomes about antisemitism, for me it\u2019s certainly different because I think one is only able to truly understand prejudice-ness through which the lens they experience it \u2026 I know what it\u2019s like to be treated differently because I\u2019m Jewish and I feel like I can speak on that in a different way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Neistat then reiterated his support for Israel, talked about loving the country and its people, and visiting the Jewish state. He noted that while it\u2019s\u00a0 \u201cfair\u201d to criticize Israeli politics and leaders, he gets upset when people try to deny Israel\u2019s right to exist and defend its borders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI think what\u2019s so frustrating about this conversation is you\u2019re not allowed to say, \u2018I want innocent people living in Palestine to not be suffering and I want them to have good lives. But I also believe \u2014 I don\u2019t just believe, I\u2019m convinced of the fact \u2014 that Israel has every right to exist and when attacked, Israel has every right to protect itself and to fight back.\u2019 And you\u2019re not allowed to say those two things,\u201d Neistat told Youshaei. \u201cYou\u2019re not allowed to say that you think there are good people in Palestine and that you support the state of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He then referred to the anti-Israel demonstrators who were just outside his office building and told Youshaei: \u201cIf I went down there and tried to say that to those people screaming, marching down the street, they would not be receptive to that conversation. And that is really hard. It\u2019s super hard to have that conversation and it\u2019s frustrating. So it\u2019s not hard to speak up. It\u2019s hard to try to reconcile that we can\u2019t be civil and have an honest conversation about such a volatile, dangerous, personal matter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cRealistically, there would be violence if I went down there with an Israeli flag,\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t mean to generalize; perhaps there would be people down there willing to engage in conversation.
