Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, said during a press conference on Thursday that he would have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested if the premier arrived on Canadian soil, in line with a warrant\u00a0issued<\/a>\u00a0by the International Criminal Court.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, as Canada has always said, it\u2019s really important that everyone abide by international law,\u201d Trudeau\u00a0said<\/a>. \u201cThis is something we\u2019ve been calling on from the beginning of the conflict. We are one of the founding members of the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Both the ICC and the ICJ are located in The Hague, although the court of justice is a United Nations body and the criminal court is a stand-alone body. The International Criminal Court issued warrants on Thursday for Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, the former Israeli defense minister, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe stand up for international law, and we will abide by all the regulations and rulings of the international courts,\u201d Trudeau added. \u201cThis is just who we are as Canadians.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Netanyahu has\u00a0called<\/a>\u00a0the court\u2019s decision a \u201cmodern Dreyfus trial,\u201d while U.S. President Joe Biden recycled a six-month-old statement, in which he\u00a0referred<\/a>\u00a0to the court\u2019s decision as \u201coutrageous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Leo Housakos, a Quebec senator,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that Trudeau\u2019s were \u201cdisgraceful comments\u201d that suggested that \u201cCanadian authorities would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis ill-considered endorsement of the ICC\u2019s politically motivated actions is a slap in the face to our ally and to every innocent Israeli still being held hostage,\u201d Housakos stated. \u201cWe stand with the people of Israel and support their right to self-defense against terrorism. The actions taken by both the ICC and Justin Trudeau should be condemned as a dangerous precedent that threatens global stability and the principles of international law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have to say that we\u2019re horrified, but not shocked,\u201d Michael Teper, a board member of Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation, told JNS of Trudeau\u2019s comments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe statement is sadly highly predictable and indicative of the overall attitudes of the government of Canada these days,\u201d Teper said. \u201cIt\u2019s really just sad that Mr. Trudeau is taking this approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the day,\u00a0Anthony Housefather<\/a>, Canadian special advisor on Jewish community relations and antisemitism,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cIsrael was attacked by terrorists on Oct 7. The warrant issued by the ICC today against Netanyahu and Gallant claims their crimes started as early as Oct. 8. A day Israel was in shock, grief and mourning. The ICC discredits itself by its actions today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Amir Epstein, director of Tafsik, an Israel advocacy group with affiliates in Toronto and Winnipeg, told JNS that \u201cthe idea that Canada is aligned with Islamofascist countries that dictate what the ICC, the ICJ and the United Nations say and do is no longer surprising to anyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He noted that dictators are able to \u201ccome freely into Canada,\u201d which \u201cis both laughable and embarrassing at the same time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Abraham Global Peace Initiative in Toronto stated that it \u201cexpresses its strongest condemnation\u201d of the court\u2019s \u201creckless and politically motivated\u201d action.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision underscores the ICC\u2019s troubling trend of weaponization against Israel, prepared by the Palestinian Authority and its allies since 2015,\u201d the group said. \u201cThe ICC\u2019s arrest warrants dangerously distort international justice by empowering extremists, exacerbating global antisemitism and undermining peace efforts during a time of heightened tensions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
