Pressure is mounting on a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that has usurped the name of a Jewish lawyer and anti-genocide activist to pursue a campaign of strident anti-Israel activism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this month,\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0exposed<\/a>\u00a0the extreme anti-Israel activities of the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, reporting that family members of Raphael Lemkin are outraged that the name of Lemkin, who died in 1959, is being used without their permission to groundlessly vilify the world\u2019s lone Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jewish organizations and Israeli government representatives voiced alarm at the situation disclosed in the article. Lemkin was an ardent Zionist who coined the term genocide and spearheaded the effort to win passage of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, while the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, founded in 2021, has repeatedly and \u2014 despite all evidence to the contrary \u2014 accused Israel of planning and perpetrating a genocide in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention (@LemkinInstitute<\/a>) is desecrating the name of Raphael Lemkin and the word \u2018genocide\u2019 by falsely labeling the Gaza war as \u2018genocide,’\u201d the Simon Weisenthal Center\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in a social media post linking to\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0story. \u201cLemkin was a Jewish lawyer who coined the term \u2018genocide\u2019 and dedicated his life to exposing the horrors of the Holocaust. While the Lemkin Institute is entitled to its political agenda, it has no right to besmirch Lemkin\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

An Israeli diplomat, Tammy Rahaminoff-Honig,\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0about the article from her official government account: \u201cAn important story by\u00a0@IraStoll<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0@Algemeiner<\/a>\u00a0reveals infuriating abuse by @LemkinInstitute of Raphael Lemkin\u2019s name and legacy, as well as the terms Holocaust and Genocide, for political bashing of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Azerbaijani Jewish Assembly of America\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0in response to the article, \u201cFinally, @LemkinInstitute has been exposed. It has been a platform for not only antisemitic rhetoric but also blatant Azerbaijanophobia. Backed by funding from the Armenian lobby, it has relentlessly targeted Azerbaijan, promoting the dehumanization of the Azerbaijani people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lemkin Institute, which didn\u2019t answer\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/em>\u2018s inquiries before the article was published, issued \u201ca note on recent criticism of the Lemkin Institute<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud of our record and of our unfailingly frank assessments,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIt is almost never popular to call out genocide as it is happening or to point to red flags as the process is getting started.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a social media\u00a0post<\/a>, Michel Elgort characterized the Lemkin Institute\u2019s note as \u201ca very long, vague, and empty statement that didn\u2019t answer the most basic question that was asked by\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/em>: Did you or did you not co-opted the name of Raphael Lemkin to appropriate the good will associated with his name and works, without his family and successors approval?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
