Photo: REUTERS\/Hannah McKay<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An <strong>Irish cleric<\/strong> has come under fire for delivering an antisemitic memorial sermon in which he suggested that Israelis and Jews see themselves as a \u201cmaster race\u201d that justifies \u201celiminating\u201d other groups \u201cbecause they don\u2019t count.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Reverend Canon David Oxley delivered the sermon last week at St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral in Dublin during a Remembrance Sunday service attended by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/02\/05\/el-al-not-returning-flights-to-ireland-morocco-due-to-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Irish President Michael Higgins<\/a>\u00a0and other high-ranking dignitaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ironically, Oxley had previously revealed familial ties to the Nazis in a sermon delivered at the same event five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In last week\u2019s remarks, Oxley contended that Israel\u2019s war against the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza represented \u201cthe horrible blasphemy of the master race in action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis takes different forms in different times and places, but it is the same horrible idea, that one group of people is intrinsically more valuable than any other. Once that is accepted, then the elimination of others follows as a matter of course \u2014 because they don\u2019t count,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Oxley\u2019s comments sparked strong condemnation from both Israeli officials and Jewish leaders in Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s embassy in Ireland said Oxley had \u201chijacked\u201d the memorial service in favor of an \u201coutrageous and dangerous \u2026 libel on the State of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The statement\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IsraelinIreland\/status\/1857493706712179135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published on X<\/a>\u00a0also said the diatribe was \u201cdivorced from reality\u201d and \u201cwillfully ignored the complexities of the Middle East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland\u2019s Chief Rabbi Yoni Wieder condemned the Anglican establishment for allowing such remarks, saying it was \u201can abrogation of moral and religious leadership that such a speech could be delivered by a representative of the Church of Ireland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis type of inflammatory, hateful rhetoric has been used by politicians here countless times over the past year, and we\u2019ve seen it constantly across mainstream Irish media. Now it\u2019s gone beyond politics and journalism and is coming from a senior religious figure, a minister in a Christian Church,\u201d Wieder told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe anti-Israel narrative in Ireland now regularly spills over into overt antisemitism,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In an open letter addressed to Oxley, Wieder condemned the preacher\u2019s \u201cappalling\u201d accusations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYou fail to grasp the depth of offense invoked by suggesting that Jewish people have adopted\u00a0the same murderous outlook that was perpetuated against them by the Nazis,\u201d Wieder wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He also slammed the Anglican cleric\u2019s failure to make any mention of the threats posed by the Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist groups, which \u201care explicitly committed to destroying Israel and murdering Jews.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYou claim Israel has a policy of targeting schools, hospitals, and mosques, yet you fail to mention that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/06\/27\/israel-issues-detailed-response-refuting-un-human-rights-office-accusations-indiscriminate-bombing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hamas purposefully positions itself within<\/a>\u00a0and beneath such civilian infrastructure \u2014 and they do so precisely because they know it will deter attacks against them. Hamas have openly stated that it is their strategy to place civilians in harm\u2019s way,\u201d the chief rabbi continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wieder called the destruction in Gaza as well as the loss of life \u201can unbearable humanitarian catastrophe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYou and I are united by a desire to see an end to this heartbreaking tragedy. But the situation is also fraught with complexities, which cannot be ignored. Would it not be more honest to acknowledge this, rather than to proffer an simplistic and partisan perspective?\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During a 2019 address at the same event, Oxley reportedly disclosed his wife\u2019s ties to the Nazis, according to a report published this week by the British\u00a0<i>Jewish Chronicle<\/i>, which cited an article published at the time in the\u00a0<i>Irish Independent<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In that sermon, also delivered in the presence of the Irish president, Oxley shared that his wife, Amalia, was German and that her family included members who fought for the Third Reich.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not everyone who can boast that their mother-in-law had Adolf Hitler as a godfather. It\u2019s not everyone who would want to,\u201d he quipped, before going on to praise the Irish citizens who opposed Nazism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Oxley told the\u00a0<em>Jewish Chronicle<\/em>\u00a0that his comments, which did not represent the Church of Ireland, contained \u201cno hatred\u201d and he stood by them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn delivering my sermon, I speak only for myself. I do not speak on behalf of the Church of Ireland, or of St Patrick\u2019s Cathedral. As our church does not believe in infallibility, it is quite conceivable that I am mistaken. No one is obliged to agree with me. However, I am prepared to stand over my remarks,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThere was no hatred in my sermon, except a hatred of all theories that make one group of people more valuable than another, so that some become expendable,\u201d Oxley added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A 2021\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/embassies.gov.il\/dublin\/NewsAndEvents\/Documents\/Collier%20Antisemitism%20in%20Ireland%20_final_online.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report\u00a0<\/a>by antisemitism researcher David Collier found that traditional Christian attitudes play a significant role in shaping antisemitism in Ireland, with Christian NGOs often playing a role in perpetuating and spreading these sentiments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201c[M]uch of the antisemitism in Ireland appears to be driven from the top down. Regrettably, this certainly seems to be the state of affairs at the moment. Words carry weight, and political and religious leaders in particular ought to remember this,\u201d Wieder said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He also condemned the Church of Ireland for not distancing itself from Oxley\u2019s comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A spokesperson from St Patrick\u2019s Cathedral told the\u00a0<em>Jewish Chronicle<\/em>: \u201cIn St Patrick\u2019s Cathedral we continue to pray daily for peace in all the countries of the Middle East. We pray fervently for an end to all wars and the human suffering that they bring. Everybody, of all faiths, is welcomed in St Patrick\u2019s Cathedral.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In Europe, Ireland has been\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/21\/irish-pm-reiterates-intention-recognize-palestinian-state-this-month-says-he-abhors-israeli-actions-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">among the fiercest critics of Israel<\/a>\u00a0since Oct. 7 of last year, when Hamas-led Palestinian terrorists invaded the Jewish state from neighboring Gaza. The terrorists murdered 1,200 people, wounded thousands more, and abducted over 250 hostages in their rampage, the deadliest single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. Israel responded with an ongoing military campaign in Hamas-ruled Gaza aimed at freeing the hostages and dismantling the terrorist group\u2019s military and governing capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier this month, the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/07\/irish-parliament-passes-motion-accusing-israel-genocide-gaza-dublins-hostility-jewish-state-mounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Irish parliament passed a non-binding motion<\/a>\u00a0saying that \u201cgenocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza.\u201d As the measure passed, Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said that the government intended to join South Africa\u2019s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) before the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Around the same time, Ireland accepted the appointment of a full Palestinian ambassador for the first time, confirming that Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid would step up from her current position as Palestinian head of mission to Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In May,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/28\/spain-norway-ireland-officially-recognize-palestinian-state-denmarks-parliament-rejects-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ireland officially recognized a Palestinian state<\/a>, prompting outrage in Israel, which described the move as a \u201creward for terrorism.\u201d According to\u00a0<em>The Irish Times<\/em>, Ireland is due to have its presence in Ramallah in the West Bank upgraded from a representative office to a full embassy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s Ambassador in Dublin Dana Erlich said at the time of Ireland\u2019s recognition of \u201cPalestine\u201d that Ireland was \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/27\/ireland-not-honest-broker-mideast-conflict-says-israels-envoy-warning-against-palestine-recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not an honest broker<\/a>\u201d in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">More recently, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris last month called on the European Union to \u201creview its trade relations\u201d with Israel after the Israeli parliament passed legislation\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/10\/29\/israelis-defend-unrwa-ban-amid-us-rebuke-say-school-kids-better-off-without-agencys-poisonous-influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banning the activities in the country of UNRWA<\/a>, the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, because of its ties to Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Recent anti-Israel actions in Ireland came shortly after the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (Impact-se), an Israeli education watchdog group, released a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/05\/irish-school-textbooks-disparage-judaism-defame-israel-watchdog-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new report revealing Irish school textbooks<\/a>\u00a0have been filled with negative stereotypes and distortions of Israel, Judaism, and Jewish history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Antisemitism in Ireland has become \u201cblatant and obvious\u201d in the wake of Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 onslaught, according to Alan Shatter, a former member of parliament who served in the Irish cabinet between 2011 and 2014 as Minister for Justice, Equality and Defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shatter\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/03\/12\/antisemitism-ireland-blatant-obvious-wake-hamas-onslaught-says-jewish-former-cabinet-minister-alan-shatter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0in an interview<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year that Ireland has \u201cevolved into the most hostile state towards Israel in the entire EU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Just last month, an Irish official, Dublin City Councilor Punam Rane,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/10\/08\/irish-official-apologizes-claiming-jews-israel-control-us-economy-jewish-leaders-demand-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed during a council meeting<\/a> that Jews and Israel control the US economy, arguing that is why Washington, DC does not oppose Israel\u2019s war against
