U.S. President Joe Biden stated on Sunday night that he hopes Americans will understand why he, as \u201ca father and a president,\u201d decided to pardon his son Hunter Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department\u2019s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted,\u201d Biden stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWithout aggravating factors like use in a crime, multiple purchases or buying a weapon as a straw purchaser, people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form,\u201d the president said. \u201cThose who were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties, are typically given non-criminal resolutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Biden and his administration have previously issued very strong statements about gun control and the importance of holding offenders accountable for gun crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pardon, per a White House announcement, relates to any offenses against the country that Hunter Biden \u201chas committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from Jan. 1, 2014 through Dec. 1, 2024.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Those include but are \u201cnot limited to all offenses charged or prosecuted (including any that have resulted in convictions) by Special Counsel David C. Weiss in Docket No. 1:23-cr-00061-MN in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware and Docket No. 2:23-CR-00599-MCS-1 in the United States District Court for the Central District of California,\u201d the president added.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Less than a month ago, a reporter asked Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, during a Nov. 8 press briefing about a potential pardon. \u201cHis son, Hunter, is also up for being sentenced next month,\u201d the reporter said.\u00a0\u201cDoes the president have any intention of pardoning him?\u201d<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cWe\u2019ve\u00a0been\u00a0asked\u00a0that\u00a0question\u00a0multiple\u00a0times,\u201d Jean-Pierre said.\u00a0\u201cOur answer stands, which is no.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody in America knew this day was coming,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.).<\/span><\/p>\n

David Greenfield, CEO of the Met Council,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0that the pardon was \u201cunderstandable. But now as Democrats, we certainly have no moral high ground for any of the Trump pardons that Democrats objected to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201ctiming for the Biden pardon of Hunter couldn\u2019t have been worse,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Josh Kraushaar, editor-in-chief of\u00a0Jewish Insider<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Others\u00a0suggested<\/a>\u00a0that Trump would pardon all of the rioters who were at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJoe Biden has always been a venal liar who utilized his political power to pursue familial gain. So, of course, he\u2019s pardoning Hunter,\u201d\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0Ben Shapiro, a prominent Jewish conservative podcaster and writer. \u201cHe was always going to pardon Hunter. Hunter was the bagman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Tried to break me\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Biden stated on Sunday that the charges against Hunter Biden \u201ccame about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen, a carefully negotiated plea deal, agreed to by the Department of Justice, unraveled in the courtroom\u2014with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process,\u201d he said. \u201cHad the plea deal held, it would have been a fair, reasonable resolution of Hunter\u2019s cases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo reasonable person, who looks at the facts of Hunter\u2019s cases, can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son\u2014and that is wrong,\u201d Biden said. \u201cIn trying to break Hunter, they\u2019ve tried to break me\u2014and there\u2019s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The president said that he has followed \u201ca simple principle\u201d for his entire career, which is to \u201cjust tell the American people the truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll be fair-minded. Here\u2019s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice\u2014and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Biden was also photographed\u00a0carrying<\/a>\u00a0an anti-Israel book as he exited a bookstore in Nantucket, Mass.<\/span><\/p>\n
