U.S. President-elect Donald Trump\u2019s transition team is weighing two main options to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, including preventative airstrikes,\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday, citing four people familiar with the plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

The military option was under \u201cmore serious review\u201d in the wake of the collapse of Bashar Assad\u2019s regime in Syria and Israel\u2019s decapitation of Hezbollah\u2019s leadership in Lebanon, according to the report.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first option, the\u00a0WSJ<\/em>\u00a0stressed, involves increased U.S. military pressure on Iran, and the selling of advanced weapons to Jerusalem, such as bunker-busting bombs, that would enhance its capacity to hit Tehran\u2019s formidable nuclear facilities, some of which are reportedly located deep underground.<\/span><\/p>\n

The alternative involves American conflict with the Islamic Republic, directly threatening the Iranian ayatollahs with the military force. According to the\u00a0WSJ<\/em>, the administration would seek a diplomatic solution before resorting to force. Trump\u2019s Iran policy during his first term focused on economic sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n

All plans were in the early stages, the report added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnything can happen,\u201d Trump said in an interview with Time on Thursday when asked about war with Iran. \u201cIt\u2019s a very volatile situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During Trump\u2019s recent electoral campaign, he was informed by U.S. intelligence officials about an\u00a0Iranian plot<\/a>\u00a0to assassinate him.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201ccontinued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months,\u201d according to intelligence officials, and \u201claw-enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure President Trump is protected and the election is free from interference,\u201d stated at the time Steven Cheung, communications director for the campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since he won the election in November, Trump held three phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after which the Israeli premier said that he and his American counterpart \u201csee eye to eye on the Iranian threat in all its components, and the danger posed by it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Britain, France and Germany informed the United Nations Security Council of their willingness to reimpose \u201csnap back<\/a>\u201d international sanctions on Iran over that country\u2019s illicit nuclear program<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIran must de-escalate its nuclear program to create the political environment conducive to meaningful progress and a negotiated solution,\u201d the U.N. ambassadors of the so-called E3 countries wrote in a Dec. 6 letter to the Security Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

The threat comes after International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Grossi confirmed that Tehran has in recent weeks sharply increased its uranium enrichment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday the agency is announcing that the production capacity is increasing dramatically, of the 60% [enriched] inventory,\u201d said Grossi at the Manama Dialogue security conference in Bahrain on Dec. 6.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Islamic Republic already has enough 60%-enriched uranium for four nuclear weapons in principle, should Tehran decide to enrich it further to the roughly 90% level needed, according to\u00a0Reuters<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October, Israeli airstrikes destroyed a\u00a0secret nuclear<\/a>\u00a0weapons research facility in Parchin, 19\u00a0miles southeast of\u00a0Tehran, according to\u00a0Axios<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s two assaults against Iran\u2019s air defense system this year have left the country vulnerable to future attacks, with all four of Tehran\u2019s Russian-made S-300 surface-to-air missile batteries destroyed, according to U.S. media.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran is \u201cmore exposed than ever to strikes on its nuclear facilities. We have the opportunity to achieve our most important goal\u2014to thwart and eliminate the existential threat to the State of Israel,\u201d said Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.<\/span><\/p>\n
