Photo: REUTERS\/Molly Darlington<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland\u2019s decision to join\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/12\/hamas-applauds-irelands-decision-join-south-africa-genocide-case-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Africa\u2019s genocide case against Israel<\/a>\u00a0at the International Court of Justice and its support for redefining genocide in order to secure a conviction against the Jewish state is the key reason for shuttering Israel\u2019s embassy in Dublin, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar said on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The move to close the embassy, which Sa\u2019ar announced a day earlier, marked the first time Israel has closed an embassy of a European Union member state. It was a significant escalation in already strained relations, with Jerusalem accusing the Irish government of undermining Israel at international forums and promoting \u201cextreme anti-Israel policies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland has \u201ccrossed all the red lines,\u201d Sa\u2019ar told reporters on Monday, calling the Irish government\u2019s actions \u201cunilateral hostility and persecution\u201d rather than mere criticism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cZionism and Zionists have become derogatory words in Ireland. They called the IDF\u2019s actions war crimes,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Sa\u2019ar\u00a0blasted Dublin for supporting legal actions against Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), promoting double standards, and failing to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/06\/27\/north-carolina-legislature-approves-bill-adopting-leading-definition-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(IHRA) definition of antisemitism<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The announcement came after Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris condemned Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza, accusing the country of \u201cthe starvation of children\u201d and \u201cthe killing of civilians\u201d \u2014 remarks that Sa\u2019ar slammed as \u201cantisemitic\u201d and historically insensitive. \u201cIs Israel starving children?\u201d Sa\u2019ar asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhen Jewish children died of starvation in the Holocaust, Ireland was at best neutral in the war against Nazi Germany,\u201d Sa\u2019ar said. \u201cIn his victory speech at the end of World War II, Winston Churchill described how Ireland conducted an affair with Nazi Germany.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Irish Chief Rabbi Yoni Wieder expressed regret at the embassy closure decision but echoed concerns about the Irish government\u2019s approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIreland has chosen to vilify and roundly criticize Israel, without any recognition of the complexities of the realities in Gaza and Lebanon,\u201d Wieder told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0from Dublin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIrish political leaders have refused to acknowledge that Israel is waging war against jihadist terrorist organizations intent on its destruction. The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/29\/preacher-slammed-appalling-remarks-irish-memorial-accusing-israel-viewing-itself-master-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anti-Israel narrative in Ireland<\/a>\u00a0has become extremely hateful, and is full of disinformation and distortions,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wieder noted that Irish leaders had shown \u201cno genuine concern for the plight of the hostages\u201d taken by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, and failed to demonstrate solidarity with Israel after the attacks, in which 1,200 people were murdered and 253 taken hostage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn the immediate aftermath of Oct. 7, while many other European countries flew Israeli flags above their government or public buildings, no such act of solidarity was shown in Ireland,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Wieder went on to say that while the embassy closure would \u201cbe a blow\u201d for Israelis living in Ireland, many within that community view the move as inevitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Sa\u2019ar accused Dublin of systematically working to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/21\/irish-pm-reiterates-intention-recognize-palestinian-state-this-month-says-he-abhors-israeli-actions-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">harm Israel\u2019s relationship with the European Union<\/a>\u00a0and adopting rhetoric that dehumanized Israelis and Zionists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As relations with Ireland deteriorate, Israel plans to redirect diplomatic efforts elsewhere. Sa\u2019ar announced the opening of a new Israeli embassy in Moldova, highlighting the government\u2019s intention to focus on fostering ties with countries that show greater support for Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis is not only a matter of national pride but also of wise statesmanship,\u201d Sa\u2019ar said, emphasizing the importance of responding decisively to what he called persecution on the \u201cdiplomatic battlefield.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cActing sensibly against those who persecute the State of Israel is a matter of saving lives,\u201d Sa\u2019ar concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Harris called the embassy decision \u201cdeeply regrettable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland\u2019s Foreign Minister Miche\u00e1l Martin said there were no plans to sever diplomatic ties with Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ireland has been among Europe\u2019s fiercest critics of Israel since Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 invasion of and massacre across southern Israel, amid the ensuing war in Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last month, the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/07\/irish-parliament-passes-motion-accusing-israel-genocide-gaza-dublins-hostility-jewish-state-mounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Irish parliament passed a non-binding motion<\/a>\u00a0saying that \u201cgenocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza.\u201d Ireland\u2019s cabinet last week voted to join South Africa\u2019s \u201cgenocide\u201d case at the ICJ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In May,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/05\/28\/spain-norway-ireland-officially-recognize-palestinian-state-denmarks-parliament-rejects-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ireland officially recognized a Palestinian state<\/a>, prompting outrage in Israel, which described the move as a \u201creward for terrorism.\u201d Israel\u2019s Ambassador in Dublin Dana Erlich said at the time of Ireland\u2019s recognition of \u201cPalestine\u201d that Ireland was \u201cnot an honest broker\u201d in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Harris also called on the European Union to \u201creview its trade relations\u201d with Israel after the Israeli parliament passed legislation\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/10\/29\/israelis-defend-unrwa-ban-amid-us-rebuke-say-school-kids-better-off-without-agencys-poisonous-influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banning the activities in the country of UNRWA<\/a>, the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, because of its ties to Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Recent anti-Israel actions in Ireland came shortly after the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (Impact-se), an Israeli education watchdog group, released a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/11\/05\/irish-school-textbooks-disparage-judaism-defame-israel-watchdog-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new report revealing Irish school textbooks<\/a>\u00a0have been filled with negative stereotypes and distortions of Israel, Judaism, and Jewish history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Antisemitism in Ireland has become \u201cblatant and obvious\u201d in the wake of Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7 onslaught, according to Alan Shatter, a former member of parliament who served in the Irish cabinet between 2011 and 2014 as Minister for Justice, Equality and Defense.
